zf transmission

I have an 91 f150 with the 300 6cyl and the M50d tranny and I believe 3.08 out back. Daily driver, but I wud like to have a little more down low. I also hav a 95 f250 5 speed that I believe is the zf tranny. It is mated to a 351w. I wud kike to put the zf in the 91 f150, the 95 f250 is trash except for the running gear. I think that the bolt pattern for the 300 and the 351w are the same. Is the tranny swap worth while, too difficult, or an easy transfer. not sure if anyone else has done this or heard of it happening. thanx in asvance.

As for putting a ZF in your 91, you have the most ideal situation. You already have a truck with a ZF in it, so you will have every part you need.

The ZF will bolt up to the 300 like it's made for it (many 300s came with them). It's just a matter of if you have mechanical skills and have the means of moving heavy transmissions around. The only question is are they both 2wd/4wd? If one is 2wd and the other is 4wd, that's going to be your only problem. They have to be the same. A 2wd ZF/M50d is different than a 4wd ZF/M50d.

As for the ZF vs the M50d, the ZF is known for being very tough, and has a great gear range since it has both a granny and an over drive. Have fun! I'd love a ZF behind my 300.

I have a ZF behind my 300 and a 3.08 gear and they go great together. Starting out in 2nd gear (1st is granny on the ZF) is no problem, even with the tall rear-end. I had a 3.55 previously and the 3.08 is better, it makes 4th more useable.

Both trucks are 2wd, and I have a way of putting them in (lift, tranny jack, etc.) I just wasn't sure about the clutch, flywheel, which one to use, the drive line and if the u-joints would bolt up from the f150 to zf out of the f250. I know i cud find out this kind of info. by just looking around and research, I guess I was hoping for someone who has done this job or knows more than I do. Thanx for the reply guys I appreciate it.

Most everything should match. If not, you should have it right there on the other truck.

The only thing you may have to do is lengthen or shorten the drive shaft to match. Certainly worth the cost to have the ZF in your good truck. At least in my opinion.

zf 5spd

Tranny length is the same, so no drive shaft mods required. Clutch and slave are the same also except for the male end of the clutch hydraulic line (tranny end). I used the slave off the f350 I pulled the tranny from, so I swaped the female end on the slave cyl. with my m5od slave (just drive the roll pin out, swap and reinstall rollpin). I have since put the original slave back in after the f350 one started leaking with no problems (just had to swap female end again). The f350 I pulled my parts out of was an 89 so it could be just the older trucks that use the different end, I don't know for sure. I have this setup in my 96 f150 and love it.... until I started eating 8.8 rear ends, after 4 8.8's I put in a sterling 10.25 (which will require you to shorten drive shaft 2.5'') and a kingpin Dana 60. No complaints at all!!
