Ford changed the P/S pump design on everything in 1978 except Econolines.
Nothing except the pulleys interchange.
You cannot use a 1978 pump on a 1977 or earlier model, unless you use 1978 type brackets. The earlier brackets will not fit the later pump.
The P/S pressure hose is also different.
The 1978 and later P/S pressure hose has a straight tube on the pump end. This tube has an O-ring on it. Slide the tube into the fitting, then tighen up the nut.
The earlier hoses do not have an O-ring.
The 1978 and later pumps have a plastic reservoir, the 1977 and earlier pumps reservoir is steel.
The dipsticks are also different. 1977 and earlier are steel, with a "shepards" crook in the handle, the 1978 and later dipsticks are plastic and larger in diameter.
All P/S pumps: The P/S pulley must be pressed on/off...it doesn't just slide off.

1977 f250 power steering pump pulley part number
I just came from the ford parts desk and verified that c7 p/s pump pulley part number above is obsolete. You can get pulleys for these from dorman for about $20 through orielly or Napa - but its a real bear trying to match up a pulley to the pump unless you have the pump you pulled out. I had a rebuilt ready to go and mistakenly returned the old one for the core charge before solving this pulley issue. Lesson learned...

The two dorman parts pulleys I thought were right 300-102 and 300-122 both have too large a hold for the shaft on this P/S pump. The shaft on this one mics at about .686" internal diameter.
Any help greatly appreciated.

1973 F250 460 Power Steering Pump in 1977 F250 460
NumberDummy to the rescue again. I tracked down a P/S pump from a 73 460 and after reading through his list of applications, I determined 73/77 was same P/S pump. I popped that one in yesterday and we're good to go. Thank you.
Some lessons learned:
- Be real careful if you have to pull a pulley. We taco'd ours trying to get it off
- Because of above, and the crazy list of pulley to pump combos, youre probably best off tracking down an entire pump
- We bought a rebuilt pump, thus no pulley, and that sent us on a lengthly chase online and off, to try and find the pulley (since we bent ours trying to pull it off the leaky pump). Once we tracked down a pump with the pulley we needed, since pump was in good shape, we just threw that in rather than risk damaging THAT pulley trying to get it off and put it onto the rebuilt
