Most instrument clusters are held in by screws and then some type of trim panel covers it. Remove the trim panel by removing the applicable screws then remove the instrument cluster by removing its applicable screws. Be careful when pulling out the cluster to ensure you don't snap any wires or damage the speedo cable. Unscrew the speedo cable and remove it. Disconnect the cluster from the wiring harness. Find the lights and replace with same type light. I recommend taking the old bulbs with you when you go to the auto parts store to avoid multiple trips caused by purchasing the wrong bulbs.

Try asking this in the Explorer forum.
That's where all the Explorer owners hang out.
They should have the answer for you.
Trim styles change over time and what applied to one doesn't apply to another.

This may be of more help:
As copied from the '93 service manual:
Instrument Cluster Assembly
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Open the ash receptacle and remove two screws attaching the ash receptacle and instrument cluster trim panel. Remove the ash receptacle assembly.
3. Unsnap the cluster trim panel by pulling rearward around the edge of the panel. Depress the hazard warning switch on the steering column and remove the cluster trim panel.
4. Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster to the instrument panel.

5. Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission require the PRNDL indicator to be removed. Remove the two screws attaching the PRNDL to the cluster and slide the PRNDL down and out of the cluster. Leave PRNDL connections undisturbed.
6. Pull cluster assembly rearward to gain access to speedometer cable. If there is insufficient access to disconnect the cable at the instrument cluster, it may be necessary to disconnect at the transmission and pull the cable out far enough to disconnect at the cluster.
7. Unsnap the two wiring harness connectors and remove the cluster.
http://members.tccoa.com/charlez/images/exp_cluster2.jpg
Installation
1. Apply approximately a 5mm (3/16 inch) diameter ball of Silicone Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent in the drive hole of the speedometer head.
2. Position the cluster near its opening in the instrument panel.
3. Connect the two wiring harness connectors to the printed circuit.
4. Connect the speedometer cable (quick disconnect) to the speedometer head. Connect the speedometer cable and housing assembly to the transmission, if removed.
5. Vehicles with automatic transmissions insert PRNDL into cluster and attach with two screws.
6. Insert cluster into instrument panel housing and attach with four screws.
7. Install the cluster trim panel. Install ash receptacle assembly and attach with two screws.
8. Re-set hazard warning switch on steering column.
9. Connect battery ground cable.
NOTE:
When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
10. Check operation of all gauges, lamps and signal.
Hope this helps you out.
