2003 4.6l v8 - stalling at low idle or coast

74,000 miles and just started stalling after vehicle warms up. Will even get a surge. Can keep running by increased gas. Just recharged AC myself??? Could that have caused. Also makes noise like metal hitting on empty can.

Thought could be egr valve or fuel fillter? Where do i start? Thanks

Is this in park or when you are in gear?

While driving. It will stall coasting to a stoplight or behind traffic. Hate to take to dealership knowing they will guess like I am. I will take to autozone today and see if it is showing any codes. Any other suggestions?? Thanks

I started having a similar problem with my 2000 4.0L OHV about a month ago. The body on the crankshaft position sensor had gotten cracked and water would get in there every time I hit a puddle or went through the carwash. I can't remember which code it woudl throw when that happened, but I will try to look it up. This is a $20 part and about 30 minutes of cussing to fix.

I also had a similar problem with my 1997 F150 4.6L. Turned out that the torque converter lockup solenoid had gone bad. As I slowed down, the engine would start to bog and finally die just as I can to a stop. I could keep it running by revving the engine. In this case, I wasn't throwing any codes at all. If your check engine light isn't on, you might consider this. The local transmission shop fixed it for about $200 and I never had another problem with the transmission (the engine blew, but the tranny was SOLID!).

My problem sounds more like the tranny issue you indicated. I am not getting check engine so i question whether will get any codes.

I am also being told to look at the egr valve..

Checked codes and nothing. Did the tranny place diagnois the problem or did you before taking in.

Someone on here suggested that was the problem, so I had it towed to Aamco and they confirmed. At that time they offered free diagnostics, but I'm not sure if they still do.

I guess I just don't understand how the problem could be EGR related if you're not getting any codes at all. Between my F150 and my Explorere I've had plenty of EGR problems, and every one of them has set a code for some part of the system.

Sounds like classic idle air control motor symptoms. The noise wouldn't be related to the IAC motor.

Any tests I can do for the idle air. It doesnt start stalling until it warms up. It only drops down to 500rpms or stall a couple times then it idles alright. Had codes checked again and nothing. Thanks for any help.
