remember that it's the exhaust your drilling into, not the intake, so shavings are not that big of a deal as they just go right on thru and out the exhaust. your exhaust manifold has a lot of rust that it's letting loose on the inside but like the others I tried to keep the chunks to a minimum.. Oh and yes my directions stated put the egt probe in the drivers side exhaust manifold.

I don't know about you guys but I want to keep the turbo out of the equation...Can you tell? LOL

Dan, I don't really understand your question as I did not even suggest that EGT's would increase 2,000* But....The different in pre vs post readings can be extremely different.
I think that it was RubberDuck that had both Pre & Post probes hooked to his rig and there was a very large difference, I don't recall the exact readings but they were above 500* and I think that they approached 900*.
Perhaps he will jump in.
