Front hub engaged when transfer in 2hi?

So, sometimes when I'm driving I hear a weird whining/clicking sort of noise coming from the right front of my truck. It's an 05 Super Crew 4x4. I thought at first that it was a bearing noise, but then I can flip the swith on the transfer, and the noise goes away after it engages. Kinda makes me think that the hub isn't completely disengaging. The thing that bothers me the most is that it's intermittent. Sometimes it's there and won't go away for a couple days, and then it seems to go away on it's own and not return for weeks.

Am I headed in the right direction? Is the hub separate from the bearing on these trucks, or is it a unit bearing hub assembly up front? Anybody got a link to assembly/disassembly instructions?

Any help is appreciated.

Besides the above, if it's ONLY out of one side, I'd check the vacuum line that hooks to the hub...Could have a pinhole in it since it's intermittent.

I am a dedicated Ford guy, and like my Fords very much. But for awhile I took a Chevy Blazer away from my son and used it as a dailey driver. That is another story

But from the time I started driving it, I felt like the thing was stuck in 4wd. It had the electronic shift. I took it to two independent mechanics, and finally to a dealer. Total cost $2400. I finally got a haynes book, and figued it out. Yes, it was stuck in 4wd. Even the stupid stealership could not figure that out. It cost me $105.43 to fix the problem.

Trust your instincts and feelings before you trust anyone else!

The noise will only get worse and more frequent, check your vac solenoid for moisture, (behind battery on firewall), I changed mine to the new updated one with the built in plastic hood shield. But I've also had to replace both my hubs in the last year and a half and most recently had the seals behind the hubs replaced because I was still getting mousture and the lines were freezing overnight causing my hubs to bind up on cold mornings...crappy design! Good Luck...

I think I'll start with the vac line, but I'm suspecting the solenoid. Seems like the more that I think about it, it seems to happen more during and after rains heavy enough to cause standing water.

Anyone got a picture of the solenoid?

I appreciate all the help y'all.

I am having the exact same problem. A couple of weeks ago I took to dealership and the solenoid was replaced because the 4wd was engaging while driving down the road. Now I have to take it back again because I have the clicking problem on both sides in the hubs very noticeable when turning. I swithch it to 4 hi and the back to 2 hi and it goes away gonna go back I guess!! Will post what i find out.. Good luck on your end and pass any info our way.. Thanks

long time no post. Sorry y'all.

I checked the line and it wasn't that. It's in good shape and holding vacuum. I'm gonna replace the solenoid next, I guess. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Alright, so I called my local NAPA dude and he can't find the part anywhere. Can someone throw me a bone and shoot me a manufacturer's part number or some search ideas? Or for that matter a good place on-line to find it? I really hope it's not a stealership only item.

Nevermind. Found a TSB referencing the IWE Solenoid on this site. It had a manufacturer's part number of 6L3Z-9E441-A. This is in fact a dealer-only item, but it's cheap. Mine was $24.18 before sales tax. More later after I install it.

Sounds more like the hub than the solenoid to me.

Had the similar problem, and turned out the vacuum hose had a leak. Quick fix and no more problems.
