460 efi block/heads/intake compatibility question

Hi all,

I have a 1978 F-350 with a 460 motor in it, and I was beginning to collect parts to fuel inject it.

q: Is the older block compatible with the newer heads on the efi 460s (88 and newer)?

Thanks,

Andy

I think the EFI heads will bolt on but you may have to change pistons to get your compression ratio where you want it since the head chamber volume is different. You'll also want a donner truck to get the complete wiring harness off of including the computer and all the other equipment the wiring harness hooks up to. Ford also made some exhaust port changes in May of 1989 and I also believe around 1990-91. I have a 460 built May 12th 1989 and my exhaust port size measures about what a small block C*** measures: 1.5" X 1.5". I have also found the complete gasket set is kinda spendy for the injected engines around $150 for a complete set and that price was discounted from $195. Deen

460 efi block/heads/intake compatibility question

Great info;

which head casting number should I be looking for? the plans for the motor involve an 8 or 8.5 to 1 compression ratio, electromotive fuel injection, and a kenne-bell supercharger.

Thanks!

Andy, I do not have any info on casting numbers and I'm not sure if the injected manifold will match up with the carburated heads. You might try calling Ford Motorsport at (810) 468-1356 between 10:00-6:00 EST they should be able to help. Also keep us informed of your project...sounds very interesting. Deen

460 efi block/heads/intake compatibility question

I realize this is not a true blue(oval)swap, but a friend of mine went with a G/M throttle body set up,HEI ignition and used his same heads. We made an adaptor from carb to tbi, computer and wiring from junk yard.Unless you were going in to the motor anyway this may be a cheaper way to go.And I hate to admit it but the HEI ignition is hard to beat. My preferance would be put a 750cfm Carter or Edlebrock(same)on it and drive it.You are not going to see that much difference in fuel economy, and believe me a whole lot less headack. Your call, good luck

460 efi block/heads/intake compatibility question

The casting #'s for the 460 EFI heads are E7TA(same as a small block head, but you'll obviously notice the difference)The year was 1987 that they(Ford) made the change in the intake and exhaust ports(Ford essentially filled in the ports with cast iron and redesigned the runners and the port itself, especially the exhausts). The intakes are much smaller than previous 460's(as are the valves, 1.975" compared to 2.08" for non-EFI) in order to keep port velocity up. The exhaust ports are also smaller but flow better because of port redesign(yet, still retain same size valve @ 1.65" as previous 460's). With port work and installation of larger valves these heads will ALMOST outflow a set of ported CJ heads. Look at the November 1996 Super Ford magazine on page 104. You'll see what I mean.
The intake manifold from an EFI 460 will have to have the ports enlarged to work with non-EFI heads, or power robbing turbulance will occur due to port mismatch.
I hope this helps in any way.

I have a 1978 F-150 (460) with a 1989 short block.
Had to use pre 85' Heads, because the exhaust ports were square on the 89' Heads and Oval on my Exhaust Headers.
Also the intake (edelbrock-performer) bolted up to the 89' heads, but ports was way off.

Hope this will help you.

460 efi block/heads/intake compatibility question

I have a 1992 460 that had dropped a rod. I am using a 1973 block, crank, and related balance parts. I also have D0VE-C heads and plan to use the MAF computer system from a 1994 302 engine. The 460 heads from 1973 to 1997 are 92-97cc. The 2-bolt main blocks are the same except the deck height changed from 10.300 to 10.322 in 1973. The EFI intake ports are higher in 1987 by about 1/4 inch. However I have port matched the heads to the EFI intake with casting metal to spare. I plan to trick the MAF computer by increasing the injectors by 150% (460/302) and recalibrating the MAF to the new injectors. This is a fairly common MAF trick among the HO Mustang crowd. I am using Keith Black pistons to get 10.5:1 compression.

The SuperFord EFI head reference is very interesting. I'll call Monday for a back issue if I can get it. Anybody out there have a copy if back issues are no longer available?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

there is a great deal of information in this thread. I was hoping that it would be just an easy bolt on and use megasquirt for my computer. I think the easiest thing i can do is get the the entire EFI engine and shave the heads a bit to get some compression back and put a cam in it, drop it in, get some custom headers made to fit the truck, megasquirt it and ride
