oil cooler to NON cooler conversion
What parts will I need to convert from a 460 oil cooled engine to a "non-oil cooled" engine, gang?....
Anybody ever done the conversion?...My .040 over block will return from the machine shop to the oak tree out back this week-end and I need to start working on the oil system. I really want just the regular filter hanging off the block. Nothing fancy...
H'mmmm...any ideas?
Thanks,
LaptopGeek

Hi Dre ---
Thanks for your input. You're saying then, that there is no way to revert the engine to an ordinary, standard "oil-filter only" engine and that if I want to use it I am pretty much FORCED to use the Ford oil-cooler? The engine, b-t-w came out of a 1986 Ford Econoline 350 van so it is very heavy duty.
I was hoping there would be a standard Ford "adapter" I could use to screw a standard filter onto...
Again, thanks for your reply,
LaptopGeek

No, misunderstood your post.
you want to remove the remote oil "COOLER".
Yes, it should unscrew from the block, If the filter doesn't screw onto the nipple thats in the block, Ford still sells the standard nipples (threaded tube) for your block.
Had to buy one myself, but forgot the part #.

Hey Laptopgeek,
I have a '96 F-350 without the oil cooler but I'd like to have an oil cooler because I'm gonna be pulling a fifth wheeler. If you do the home work and determine for certain that your cooler, lines, etc. would fit my truck, I'd be glad to swap my non-cooler casting for your stuff.

Dre - thanks, that sounds much better. I will go to ford and get the standard nipple the filter screws onto. I really don't need the oil cooler, as I won't be doing anything but driving the F-100 to work and back (110 miles). Never pull anything - never intend to pull anything with the truck. Just standard transportation.
Sure wish I had a part number though, so I won't freak Ford out when I try and explain what I need....

Sorry, all I have is the funky adapter that screws onto the block with a little hollow bolt and the lines that lead TO the cooler, nothing else. You see, the 460 and all that was attached to it came out of a Ford Econoline 350 (including C-6), but the stuff that was mounted to the van frame did not come with the engine (cooler unit and bracketing..../ whatever....).
Hey, Hank.....since you seem to have the standard filter; what's underneath the filter....? Does it just screw onto a threaded shaft? Does the shaft appear to be hollow?...
Thanks,
LaptopGeek

Yup, I just did that exact thing on my 460. I took off the oil cooler female thread insert using the right sized socket, went to Ford and bought a new oil filter male thread insert and installed it using the hex end of a punch that just happened to be the right size. The oil filter male threaded insert wasn't too expensive, about $8 I think.

Mrlaserboy ---- thanks!!
Hey....kewl web-site!! I really like it!! Got any pictures / feedback on your AIR-HORNS? I really need some for this Atlanta traffic - I have my eyes set on a $300 set at www.wolo.com. I'd like to see how you have your horns mounted - if you have a jpg why don't you share it with me at webmaster@beedzncomputers.com?
Thanks...

Thanks,
I installed a cheap pair of Wolo air horns, $15 or so, and I regretted it. Sounded like a circus car, FWEEEEEP. LOL Anyways, I just went back to regular horns I pulled out of a car at the u-pull-it yard, sounds much better. I made a bracket out of some 1/8x1" aluminum and screwed it to the plastic fender liner underneath the overflow/washer fluid bottles- nothing fancy there.

I'm a little confused about what the stock engine oil cooler and adapter looks like. I have a steel casting which fastens to the engine block with a single large(3/4"?) bolt, accessible thru a hole in the front cross member. The FL-1A oil filter simply spins onto a male post. The casting has 2 hex-headed plugs screwed into it, which I presume are take-offs for the aux cooler lines. There is nothing under the filter. Since I don't know if the stock aux cooler is a radiator mounted cooler coil, or a 3" round X 16" long water to oil cooler thingie, as someone has indicated, you can see my confusion.
If anyone can go into a long diatribe explaining this whole situation, I'd appreciate it. I may be able to use your adapter and hard lines and just hook up an aftermarket cooler coil. Are the two lines connected to the adapter at a right angle? For clearance purposes, it looks as though they should be.
Thanks to everyone for any input.

Hanksmith,
Sorry, I can't provide any input on the cooler thingie....as the engine was deliverd to my house with all the hoses and stuff hanging off of it. The cooler was back in the junk yard in the Econoline van. I simply took of the adapter and spun the threaded insert and I'm in business with a "standard" oil filter - I really don't haul anything that heavy that warrants using an oil cooler. Good luck...
