How can you tell if you have the HD Trailer Tow?
I have a 2004 Expedition, that is an ex-police cruiser. I was wondering how you can tell if it has the HD trailer tow package. The truck only has the 4 wire harness in the rear, but I wasn't sure if the police package had the heavy duty radiator and the auxiliary trans. cooler. Could anyone help me out?

In 2005 the police package (SSV) would have the same tow package option that XLT's had:
Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package (req. 3.73 axle)
(includes 4-pin & 7-pin wire harness, heavy duty
transmission oil cooler, heavy duty radiator, Class
IV hitch/receiver, and electronic braking wiring kit)
The oil cooler was not standard on SSVs, only came with the towing package. So I would assume since you only have the 4-pin connector, you do not have the towing package.
In 2003 all Expeditions had the tow package.
(The above is from the 2003 and 2005 Model Year Marketing Strategy and Mix Recommendations, don't have a 2004.)

So if you have both the 4/7 pin connectors and it says 8k on the tow package I should have EVERYTHING on that list for the HD Tow package? The only question I have is about the Braking Wiring kit. How is that supposed to work and is it a passive feature or something I have to engage. I just am not sure what that is cause I really haven't had to tow anything large. If its something I have to engage where would I. If its part of the harnesses that I plug into then cool. I just want to know how it all works because Im about to haul a 6'x12' Uhaul when I PCS for the military and dont want to get myself into any trouble while im on the road from here in New Mexico to Northern california.

the harness they give you is a pigtail that you splice into the harness of the aftermarket brake controller you buy to make electric trailer brakes work. then that pigtail will plug into the factory harness down by your brake pedal which will send a signal to the seven pin harness to apply and release the electric brakes.

more then likely i would say it was. i picked up a prodigy brake controller for mine it works well and is a duel sensing unit they run about a hundred dollors and if the guy took the pigtail with it you can buy that from your brake controller dealer also. these things are a must have if you are pulling with electric trailer brakes.
