Oil capacity for 400M

I bought a 1967 F100 with a 1978 400M engine. My Chilton"s manual says it should take 6 quarts of oil, but 5 takes it to full on the dipstick. The engine comes out of a 1978 Lincoln- was there a smaller capacity on the 400 in passenger cars or is my dipstick reading wrong??

Yep. Cars hold 5 while the trucks had a deeper pan and held 6.

mr lemming hi paul here aka father/son do not forget sir please, that your FILTER holds a reasonable volume, my point to you, i suspect that there is nothing wrong with your dipstick at all sir. it is the total volume encased in in your motor by DESIGN that determines the level. just my op and my thoughts. carry on US MD ps i have been known to be WRONG in the past. just an op.

Thank you, Paul, I understand about the oil filter capacity. I just saw the 6 qts. in the Chilton's manual for trucks and wanted to make sure that I wasn't running too little oil. My oil pressure gauge only points to the "O" on "OIL" so it is a little below the midpoint on the gauge, so I was just double checking. I have no problem though- the engine runs fine. I know it came out of a 1978 Continental and I suspected the 5 qt. capacity was right. I love the engine- plenty of torque for this shortbed classic!!

The 400 in my 79 250 takes 7 qts. That's 1 qt more than my dad's 77 150 with a 400.

Fill it till it's up the the full mark, and you'll know how much.

My 351m in my 78 takes 7 quarts also. But it had a stock crate engine dropped into it years ago.Anyone know if they put a deeper pan on a crate engine?
