What part is this? (Pic)

My truck has been making a horrible sound lately and I finally figured out what it was...the part circled is broken. Unfortunately, I have no clue what the part is called or what it does. I've referenced the manual I have for 80-96 F150's, and can't find it in there either. Any ideas?

That part your pointing at is for your EGR system. As pic shows that is a I6 engine i believe. I have never had one so I dont know the exact but if its anything like my 351 then it connects up to the manifold and pumps exhaust air back into the manifold to get "reburnt" If you have a crack in it, it prob likes like a large exhaust leak?

Yah, exactly. Really noisy and really annoying. Trying to figure out what it's called so I can see if I can get it off the net. Autoparts store already told me they couldn't get it...

P.S. Yes, it is an I6 engine

Yea its the EGR heater tube, on 5.0 Mustang they were called Thermactor tubes, in you truck case I dont really know, someone here should. If you can get if off or see the crack, if you have a welder or know a good one, see if they can weld it up, if not your prob going to be lookin at a junkyard

I find them totally useless, mine had long been removed when I did my LT headers. Air tubes everywhere into the stock manifolds and everywhere.

There is a lot of incorrect information here. That's an air injection tube (manifold maybe), part of the thermactor system as Ford calls it. It has absolutely nothing to do with EGR, though. Air from the smog pump is injected into the exhaust ports to help the catalysts work properly. Usually the upstream injection point is only used at start up to help light off the first catalyst faster, then air is routed to the secondary cat or dumped back to atmosphere depending on what the computer commands. I seem to remember this part being a dealer-only item and that it costs $Texas.

Reviving an old thread here.

So Im having the same prob, getting an exhaust leak from this tube, I tried tightening the nuts but the thing is still loose, and I dont want to have gone through all the work of removing the manifold for nothing, it took me about 3 months to get around to doing it the first time, so I wont be doing it again. Im selling it to my GFs little bro and dont want to give it to him with a leak.

So my question is, Is the tube supposed to be a little loose or is it gonna leak stilll without fixing it? Can I just plug those holes and remove that part of the air injection?

Plug the holes and all will be fine. I swapped a newer motor into my old 77 and had those things leak on me made a terrible noise. I put bolts in the holes and JB welded over them and never looked back!

Air Injection manifold

Its a 4.9l I6 (Straight 6) (for tha old farts like myself).
It's also known as “Secondary Air Injection Tube”; “Thermactor Tube”; "Air Injection Manifold" or "The Rake".
I found 2 sites the beat the pants off the Ford house.
Try http://www.pciinc.com/ http://www.theflangeman.com

Part number 412 is the “Ford OE replacement A.I.R. manifold tube” and it comes with the 6 ferrule nuts. Also part number 187 “Ford OE replacement exhaust/air check valve”. (same part numbers for both sites)

I called the dealer and verified the part numbers for both the tube (F5TZ-9B445-B) and the valve (E7TZ-9A487-B) and they are the same for my 1996; (Straight 6) 4.9l I6, Manual, a/c, code Y in vin.
The dealer wanted $266 for the main tube, $22 for each ferrule nut (X6 of them--$132) and $172 for the check valve…Total $570 + tax.

From the websites above parts for:

Main tube $62.69, ferrule nuts included free, check valve $25.39…Total with shipping $98.08.
But check both sites.... one offered same parts:
Main tube $29.88 and check valve $12.03 (sorry did not get shipping b4 I wrote this (senior moment)).

Hope this helps someone else on their FORD TRUCK!!!
As much as this sites HELPED me!!!

Yup me too. Nice work MSKnudson. I have some air injection tubing work to do on my 93 5.0. Thank you for the site info. I had trouble with the link for FlangeMan in MSK's post, so I'm trying it here.https://www.theflangeman.com/index.html

Post Saved $500!

This thread just saved me nearly $500!!! Helmet's off to MSKnudson! Local Ford dealer was quoting me just over $600 for the tube, ferrules, and check valve but pciinc is $102 for the same. One happy guy right now cause my tube had more leaks than TSA with 27 Snowdens!
