Water in fuel

I've had my truck for the last 250,000 miles. I fuel up where ever fuel is cheap. I usually run a quart of ATF per tank. In the winter I run powerservice in the winter. I have ITP's prepump kit with fuel/water seperator. I have never seen my Water in fuel light come on untill yesterday. I thought that it was burnt out. When I drain the fuel bowl i get a bunch of water, but the funny thing is that I don't get any water out of the filter on the back. Is there any possible way that water can get into the fuel other then the fuel tank? I know it is a stupid question. You would think that if there was a bunch of water in the tank the fuel water seperator would have some in it to.

My water in fuel light came on a couple days ago. I have a stock fuel system so I drained the bowl and changed the filter. Had to clean out a little sludge at the bottom of the bowl. Light is staying off so I guess that did the trick.

That is the first time that light came on on mine. 115,500 miles.

You would think your water seperator would have cought the water.

Good luck

If I remember correctly, the ITP kit comes with a Baldwin BF1212 filter (I have the same filter prepump) with a water drain. If your ITP kit did come with the Baldwin filter:

The Baldwin filter "strips" water from the fuel and must be drained off. I'm just guessing here, but it sounds like you picked up a bunch of water in your last fill-up OR you haven't been draining off the Baldwin filter. I'd pull the Baldwin and drain it into something and look for water. If it is loaded, then I'd get a hose down to the bottom of the fuel tank and suck off the water, until fuel comes out with little or no water. Then I'd change out my filters and get a water emulsifier into the fuel tank.

LIKE I SAID there was no water in the bf1212 filter(I have both samples in a clear liter bottle) but there was water in the fuel bowl. and a lot of it. all i was wondering was if there was some other way that water could get into the system. I guess I didn't say that it has been raining.

Sorry about that...didn't see or saw and didn't comprehend. Wow, that is a mystery. I can't think of any other way it could get into your fuel other than through the tank

I'll see your dumb question & raise you one. Is your pre-filter installed backwards? There's no reason the pre-filter should not have caught the water. Have you tried removing the element and seeing if the bowl will catch the water without it?

Don't see how rain or monsoon would affect it without you having a significant fuel leak. Unless your fuel bowl has been catching one drop at a time for a long while and it finally hot high enough to trigger the light I'm at a loss. Of course if you drain the fuel bowl with filter changes that rules out this idea.
