ABS wheel speed sensor resistance?

Hi,

What's the resistance of the front wheel speed sensors on a 2001 F150?

The rear diff sensor is 1500 ohms.

Replace the sensor if they're either open or shorted. Otherwise, both sides should be similar to the other and are likely of similar value to the rear sensor.

Exclamation

The rear sensor is 1500 ohms, I replaced it cause its $18.

The front sensors both read about 450 ohms, but there $125 each. I throw parts at my truck when there cheap. $250 is enough to verify the readings.

It's been a few weeks since I asked about the front sensor resistance. no one seems to know on ford-trucks or F150online.com.

my ABS kicks in all the time when going slow, less than 5MPH. No ABS light.
Sensors are clean, all four rotors are less than a year old. I flushed the brake fluid. Replaced rear diff sensor. I see posts that the rear sensor tends to fail.

A couple of ABS module repair shops fix the electronic module for about $150, but they say the F150 Kelsey-Hayes usually runs the pump all the time due to a underrated electronic turn on device.

Thanks,

Jerry

Still trying to fix my ABS!
Don't want to pull the fuse to ignor the problem.

Most hall-effect type sensors i've seen usually run in the range of 600 to 1600 ohms. I haven't actually checked them on my truck before but 450 ohms doesn't seem too out of place.

Service manual says between 300 and 500 for the front sensors.

Reference section 206-09b subsection E2

Here's what the symptom charts suggests for your symptom:

o ABS Misfire, ABS Too Sensitive, ABS Fires On Normal Stop

Possible Source(s):
§ Rear anti-lock brake sensor indicator is damaged.

Action(s) to take:
§ REMOVE rear sensor from the differential housing; INSPECT rear anti-lock brake sensor indicator.

Possible Source(s):
§ Front anti-lock brake sensor indicator is damaged.

Action(s) to take:
§ INSPECT for damaged teeth. INSPECT both front tone rings.

Possible Source(s):
§ Sensor output is out of sync.

Action(s) to take:
§ If left front sensor output is out of sync, GO to «Pinpoint Test F». If right front sensor output is out of sync, GO to «Pinpoint Test H». If rear sensor output is out of sync, GO to «Pinpoint Test J».

Possible Source(s):
§ Intermittent open or shorted sensor circuit.

Action(s) to take:
§ GO to Intermittent Failures to test circuits: 514 (YE/RD), 516 (YE/BK), 523 (RD/PK) and 519 (LG/BK).

Possible Source(s):
§ Chafed wire insulation or pinched wire due to improper routing causing intermittent short.

Action(s) to take:
§ INSPECT wiring harness from front sensor knuckle to the frame and from the rear axle to the frame for worn or chafed wire insulation.

Possible Source(s):
§ Rear brake adjustment too tight.
§ Linings are grabby.

Action(s) to take:
§ ELIMINATE base brake system as cause of problem.

Possible Source(s):
§ Loose sensor(s).

Action(s) to take:
§ TIGHTEN sensor bolt to specifications. REFER to Specifications.

Thanks for the info Steve.

I've read some post that you can jumper a pin on the ABS and then read the ABS light flashes for codes.

Does anybody have anything on this?

ABS code readers are expensive and not readily avaliable, a jumper and reading flashes is easy (for me!)

Thanks,

Jerry

Nope, can't do that on a 4WABS system, only a RABS system. Gotta have the scanner.

Shouldn't you see AC voltage from the sensor when the wheel is rotated?

Yes. The frequency will be proportional to the rotational speed.

Now would the voltage change as the wheel speed increased?

4WABS front sensors

Try ROCK Auto for the front sensors, only about $45/50 each.

Question

Replaced the front wheel speed sensors, didn't help.
I replaced the rear diff speed sensor a few months ago, didn't help.
Everything is loose, rotors & pads are less than a year old. Been flushed a few times.
ABS light only comes on when ignition is turned on, 100% normal.
My mechanic says the hubs/bearings are tight.
Problem is the ABS starts pulsing at 5 MPH when slowing down, stops pulsing at 1 MPH. ABS light doesn't come on when this happens. Some times the ABS startts pulsing when I'm going under 5mph with my foot off the brake.

Some say it's the hubs/bearings are loose so the tone ring gap increases at slow speed.

Since the ABS light doesnt come on when its false triggering I don't think any codes are dropped. I read a post on f150online com from another guy that has this same problem.

SHould I just put on two new hubs for $200 each?

thanks,

Jerry

Question

How can the ABS be disabled on the F150 ABS (4WABS)???

Right now its more of a safety problem than its worth!
I can't stop on the steep hill by my house since when the ABS kicks in below 5mph I cant stop! Have tried everything but replace the hubs.

Thanks,

Jerry
