carb for 390

I have just been puttting my motor back together after getting a ong block from a rebuilder. I bought a hi po 390 intake from a junkyard today to help the breathing. The motor is a 390 bored .40 over and is basically stock. I have a holley 750 carb but am afraid it is too much for the what I need. Is there a guide to jeting down the carb to fit the size motor? Further is a spacer necessary? There is no smog items on the old truck so, would the spacer help or not?
Also, a puzzle is that there is two oil galley taps out the side ofthe block. it's stamping under the oil filter shows it to be a 2M7 with an "E" on top of it. I knew that FT motors had the side oil passages for the oil cooler, but the dizzy hole is right for a car block, so anyone have any ideas about why they are there? I thought about using one to run a mechanical oil gauge from and blocking the other, or perhaps just putting an oil cooler on it. Any ideas? Thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-02 AT 03:29 AM (EST)]I don't know about the oil galaries but a 750 holley is just right for a strong 390 most are recomended to run 650's to 800's cfm and the spacer is a good idea from my experiance, try a 2 inch spacer.

It really depends what you HAVE in that engine. Just saying it is a 390 bored .040 over tells us nothing.

What cam are ya runnin'?
What compression?
What's your fuel system like?

Other than that, a 750 is fine if your engine is built for mid to high RPM power, otherwise a 600 should settle your fuel needs.

As for the plugs. I have screw in plugs on the side of my block, but those are to drain coolant.

Thanks for the comeback. I'll check to see where the plugs go into, but they appear to go into the main bearing web oil galley.
AS to the cam, it is going to have stay stock for a little while since the remanufactuer that I ended up buying it from told me that if I changed the cam, then the warranty is void. So after 6000 miles warranty is out, I will probably put a hotter cam in it. The intake is a "S" marked four barrel intake. I'll try to find a 2 inch riser per your advice. Thanks.

Any ideas on deciphering the date of manufacture as listed above? I cna't find any casting numbers on the block except those.

July of 1972?

I would recommend a 1 inch spacer and 600 CFM carb for a stock cam and low compression.

I have a Holley 750cfm with a 1" 4 hole spacer and a Streetmaster intake. Mine runs really smooth and has plenty of omph.

You can see mine here
http://1969ford.ods.org/mytruck.htm

F250 with a:
1967 merc cougar 390, Stock it is rated at 315hp. 10.5 to 1 compression.

Just got done rebuilding it.
