New Exhaust

The exhaust on my 93 Ford is very rusted out...its got holes the length of the exhaust and more holes in the muffler. Im not sure what size the stock exhaust is but i was wondering what size exhaust i should get?. Does anybody know if a 93 should have a cat?...i know my truck for sure doesnt have one. and where the cat normally would be theres a piece of tube bolted in there that looks like a cat delete. My next question is should i add a cat in my new exhaust?. Another question is i here alot about running straight pipes on diesels. so i was wondering what kind of exhaust you guys are running on your trucks?. Last questions is about the headers. Have any of you on here changed your headers to something better or are aftermarket headers even available?. Thanks

My 94 doesn't have a cat on it. I don't think anybody had one on a diesel till 95 and that still depended on the GVWR or it did with Chevy and the 6.5's.

There is alot of guys on here that have tinkered with their exhaust. I am not "cool" anymore so I don't run loud exhaust or big tires.

3" pipe from turbo to the tailpipe behind the rear wheel, all stainless, and constant diameter. Sounds nice when the turbo spools up.

I've got a '93 7.3 n/a that I just replaced the exhaust on. No Cat, don't think it ever had one. I ran a 3.5 from the Y back.

Still have the old exhaust. Nothing wrong with it, took it out in 2 pieces. If you or anyone else wants it, come and get it, I'm in Phoenix!

1957f100, several guys around here are running no mufflers in the system. it's a little louder, but not that much, and since you're still "into" that, should be a plus. LOL. one guy has a dodge one ton with turbo and has had it chipped and 4 inch exhaust. sounds pretty mean. i've lost enough hearing that don't care if it's loud anymore, would rather be sneaky and fast.

the section of pipe you see is a factory extension so they could use the same pipes on all wheel bases

I gotta wonder how much no muffler would help. Seems like it would be obnoxiously loud.

I got my exhaust from Hypermax. www.gohypermax.com very easy to put together, comes with a muffler. Mine was only $300 shipped.

would running stacks be about the same as having a regular exhaust?.

i never really liked the look of stacks on a pickup...but thats because ive never seen them in person. yesterday on my way home from work a mid 90`s powerstroke with stakcs pulled out in front of me and starting off from a light he blew a lot of black smoke that came right into my face and right there i think i fell in love with the stacks. so im considering putting stacks on my truck. but how do stacks work?..do they just come right off the manifold...like one for the left and one for the right side?

if you've got access to benders, you can cut the pipes before the Y and make up an H section and run duals back to the bed and use a couple of adapters and 90s to turn it up. cut a couple of holes in the bed and make a bracket to brace the stacks from underneath. running without mufflers will open up the system and let it breathe better. it's not THAT much louder than stock. put it this way, it's not nearly as loud as an open piped harley.

1957F100,
You have never really said, do you have a turbo?

A NA engine running straight exhaust is rather loud.
Has a very loud cackle during decelleration, just like a jake brake.

On a turbo motor, the turbo does a good bit to smooth out the exhaust pulses, so they are not overly loud.
It will still have a cackle when you are slowing down though.

while i don't know much about the IDI engines, i can tell you what i did with my stacks on my powerstroke. i emptied out the cat and then ran 4" stainless from there, then put in a short radius 90* piece of stainless to go up to the bed to meet the y-pipe. you can check out my pics if you want to see 'em. i didn't take any pics of the up pipe, but it's rather simple to do. check out the link for the pics.
