Newbie looking for best year excursion to buy

Hey Guys/Ladies,

Newbie here looking to buy excursion..... looking for a 2wd diesel limited. im not against getting a 4wd but i will not be using it alot, would u guys get it just to have it or stay way from it if i dont do much offroading, whats the pros/cons to 4wd .. i have been checking all the forums to see what year and diesel motor 6.0/ 7.3 would be best... i will be doing basic mods to diesel ....upping boost via electronic controller ie.. bullydog/ edge electronics.. intake and exhaust... wheels and tires... either 22 or 24's...... im not looking to be towing alot with the custom wheels but if i do tow i will stick stockers back on... back to my issues.... i need to know what years to stay away from and what motors or motor/year combos....i've found a 04 6.0 limited with 32k miles but i want to hear from u guys who know all about these bad boys before i buy.... any and all info will be appreciated.. pros and cons....

Thanks Again
Regards
Rob

I would try and avoid 03 6.0L models. they were more prone to problems. That 04 may be okay but I would try to get an 05 if you want the 6.0L. Problem with the 05 is that it is kinda de-contented with missing hood liners, lights and such. At least make sure you run an OASIS report on that 04.

An 03 7.3L 2WD could be made into a raging beast!

ok... so if i find a low mileage X in 04 and it has a clean oasis, is there a certain number of miles i need to be looking for ie... like a 04 with 10k miles hasn't had enough use to have had problems or is it right off the bat with the problems or should i stick with like a 04 with at least 40k miles and clean oasis where it has had time to show what problems they have.... thanks again for your time and knowledge....

P.S. So if i want a hp beast 2wd a 2003 7.3 should do me right????

Rob

Have 2 04 6.0, both are great.

Some early 04 productions till have 03 motors, I believe sometime in Nov 03 they started using the 04 motor.

Like stated before, get a oasis report

6.0 vs 7.3, 7.3 bulletproof, 6.0 any thing with clean oasis report is key to finding good 6.0

Get an early 01 or 00 and you have forged metal rods.

Somewhere in 01, they put the thing in. Somewhere in 01, they discontinued it. The only fix is to rip the trans apart. In which case, you might as well rebuild it. BTS can set you up for $3900 and you won't have to worry about it even if you broke it because you added propane and what not to it.

If you really want to be safe, get an 00

"im looking for the overall best model" .....

That's open to interpretation, so how about this: What will you be using the truck for? Seriously, this is a BIG HEAVY vehicle that can tow ALOT.

ME: I'd want an X that will cruise from CO to MD with no problems at 70ish MPH, and be able to tow 10,000 lbs all day and through fields. Maybe OEM 18s but 16" wheels are fine for me.

I know guys that race off-shore. So there's 4 guys + gear + a $1million boat being towed behind. NEVER goes off-road but has to fit all their clothes etc. for a week. and the "small" guy is 6' 4" and 230lbs.

So... please don't take offense, but with 22" or 24" wheels & 2WD it sounds like you're looking for a "show" vehicle more than a "go" vehicle. Is this going to be a giant "cruiser" for you? What makes you want a diesel instead of a less expensive gasser?

For anyone to really help you get what you'll be happy with, you've got to give more details. Otherwise, each of us can only really recommend what we'd want, and that's not as helpful to you.

the truck will be more for show... family vehicle. family trips around 3k miles round trip... i have been around forced induction for the past 10yrs....so i want a vehicle with alot of room and that can be modiyfied with boost electroics.. besides who doesnt love the sound of a turbo.... I will be towing a Motorcycle and 4 wheelers and maybe 8 x 12 enclosed trailor....I know the gas one is alot cheaper but the diesel is like the "In Crowd" where im from and alot of my friends have the superduty's with psd in them.....the car will have a mega system with a KVH sat tv and probably do a L shaped couch in rear with a couple of focal 10's and a 27" LCD Trimed out in the rear window and a kenwood double din nav dvd upfront... thanks for all the help

Also I have both Excursion I have the 00 7.3 4*4 and a 04 6.0 4*4,
The 7.3 has been perfect. The 6.0 Has been good till recently. We were comming home from towing our 12,000 Toy Hauler and it stared blowing black smoke besides that it ausome. Both are a good choice. So if the 04 oasis is clean i would say get it,
Nick
