Mass Air, Spacer, Throttle Body???
I have a Supercrew with a 5.4L and will soon be adding a SuperChip, AirforceOne Filter, and TFX Cat-Back Exhaust.
Does anyone have any ecxperience with gains from Mass Air Flow Sensors, PowerAid Spacers, or Larger Throttle Bodies?
Thanks for the input.

Mass Air, Spacer, Throttle Body???
I have a 97 F150 (4.6) and a 00 SDF250(6.8) and I have been experimenting with both trying to find untapped power and fuel economy. One thing I have found in researching is that there are many gains in helping both trucks to breath easier. Both my trucks have identical air filter housings. Wild since the displacements and throttle bodies are way different in size. I started by throwing away the rubber air filter horn and cutting approx. 2 inches off the front of my airbox (opening the intake to a size equal if not bigger than the throttle body). What do you have to loose? Nothing if you buy an aftermarket set up, because they have you throw that part away. Next I cut the front plastic cone of my stock air filter and glued it to a new K&N airfilter(the K&N airfilter comes with a flat front) and installed it. Next i replaced my stock muffler with a Dynomax SS ultraflow muffler. With this done i pick up 1 MPG and my trucks both rev better with less laul and all for about 150 bucks($45 for the K&N and $90 for the SS ultraflow).
I just installed a poweraid TB spacer in my 4.6L and there is noticable gain in torque in the 1/8-1/4 throttle position (low RPM only). Every other open throttle position seams unaffected. I definatly notice having to use less throttle to leave from a dead stop and to maintain cruise speeds (even as high as 75 MPH in overdrive). In pulling my trailers(approx 3500#) it has also been noticed. If you are a leadfoot you would probably see no gain. I have only had this on my truck for 3 days so I have not been able to check fuel economy. I would definatly buy this product again and at $80 I think it will pay for itself.
Today I just installed a Granatelli motorsports Mass Air Sensor on my 6.8L. It Works!! Talk about waking a sleeping giant. Very noticable power gains at all speeds, RPMs & throttle positions (Fat sideways posi marks now mark the street in front of my house). This i think is a must have and for $300 i think it will pay for itself as long as i keep my foot out of it.
I have been trying these products one at a time to get proper evaluation. I think my next step will be to buy a spacer for my 6.8L and a MAS for my 4.6L. Then i am going to try headers and a y-pipe. Also i tried to buy a Hyperchip power programmer for my 6.8L SD but they only have for 1999 models no 2000 or 2001 yet.
P.S. I have only been running 87 octane pump gas so far.
I hope this helps, I know it would have saved me some time.

Mass Air, Spacer, Throttle Body???
LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-01 AT 03:14 AM (EST)[p] Hey guys i took my F250 SDCC over to my friends house. He has a 2000 F250 SDSC with identical drive train as mine (6.8, AT, 4.30LS) and I set him up with my same exhaust and a K&N air filter with his airbox cut (me with the perf. MAS and him with his stock MAS). I made him get in his truck and race me. We raced from a dead start to 60 mph. I lost traction out of the hole and I still took him by one solid truck length. That sealed my approval, also considering I have a crewcab and he a supercab. My truck weighs about 350 pounds more, plus I have a 2-piece driveshaft. My friend said "I'm ordering that MAS". I better stop giving him my inside info or else he might beat me to the choice spot next time we go camping. LOL
Next i went to the gas station and i got 12 MPG. Thats good considering i normally get 10 MPG driving around town. The most i have gotten on highways is 14 MPG. Looks like its time for a road trip for me. I will let you know more when i do.
Good Luck, Die Hard Ford Man

Mass Air, Spacer, Throttle Body???
LAST EDITED ON 16-Jul-01 AT 11:46 PM (EST)[p]My 2 cents. No need for an aftermarket MAF. They flow more than enough air in these 5.4 and 4.6's naturaly asperated. SUpercharge and yes, you'd get a benefit as you would need the capacity for more air flow. Some claim gains. Who knows, in most cases there may be a small noticable gain simply because it's leaned the A/F out. Be careful, if you do add one, that lean condition can be fatel. If you have a chip (like Superchip) let them know what you've done, and have the chip reburned to compensate for it, but then I htink you're back to where you started, and could have saved about $300.
Throttle body spacer? Great paper weights, or whistle on your truck. I've heard that on the 4.2, they actualy do make a differnce.
Some have ported their TB's. I'm not sure there either. You can port all you want, but you're still restricted to the smallest point, the elbow. Again, naturaly asperated, I'm not sure you'll see much benegit at all.
I've done bolt-ons. Superchip being the biggest bang for the buck. FIPK and Exhaust finished it off.
The end of my 2 cents.
