1994 351W vs 1994 7.3L IDI Turbo Engines

Does anybody have HP and Torque numbers for these pre-power stroke engines? I currently have a 351W gas, but I have an opportunity to put in a 94 IDI turbo engine. The IDI engine has 75k on it. My problem is that it sounds like a 94 IDI turbo engine only makes 190 horse power. The 94 351W makes over 200HP (what I have now). I can mod my 351w to make 300HP very easily. So which way should I go with this?

What do you do with the truck? Is it just a daily driver, or do you tow with it?

My original 6.9 NA motor put out 185 HP and had a bit over 300 foot pounds for torque.
I don't remember the exact torque numbers.

The engine was still running when I replaced it, but the oil thirst was rather high.
It had 300,000 miles on it at that time.
Over 1/2 of those miles were put on while towing, usually the gross weight was in the 20,000 pound neighborhood.

When I haul heavy like that I was never the first one there, but I always got there.

Yes you can build a 351 to have more power, but the fuel mileage will be worse and it will not be able to work like a diesel can.

This truck is being built to pull a gooseneck horse trailer and a RV trailer. Not a daily driver. Weekends only.

94 idi turbo is 190hp and 395ft lbs torque, non turbos make 185 dont forget that is what they stamped on it the turbo is making more than 5hp. in 94 is when the powerstroke came out, so the made the idi turbo numbers higher than the non turbo idi but lower than the powerstroke to push powerstroke sales. any diesel is going to be way better for towing than any gaser would be

with a bit of work on the air intake and more open unrestricted exhaust system you can easily make 200hp and 400ft lb of torque with the 7.3 idi without a turbo and with a well tuned injectors and turbo you should see at least 220 and 420. Your issues will be gearing, fitting fuel lines and filters and of course the front suspension condition for the heavier weight. What diff ratio and what gearbox do you have ?

If the truck is a gasser now, the engine is only the start of what you have to swap or add.

67RangerXLT: Are you saying a gas engine won't make it from point a to point b towing?

dwaymar: The truck I currently have is a 94 F350 XLT 4DR 4X4 351W E04D 4:10s SRW

NetMaker and Dave: I am getting a 1985 F350 XLT 4DR 4X4 7.3 IDI Turbo C6 4:10s DUALLY on the 27th of this month. I am buying the truck to convert my 1994 into a dually 4x4. So I bought it for the bed, fenders, dually wheels and hub extenders. The guy selling it to me says he put a 1994 IDI 7.3L in it from a wrecked truck that had 74,000 miles on it. The 85 originally had a 6.9 IDI with an aftermarket banks turbo system. He put the turbo from his 85 on the 94. He is telling me he is selling the truck for the engine and everything else is bonus-----

Thats a big bonus-everything I need to convert my 350 to a dually. All of the fenders are straight! A Dana 60 solid front axle, a 10.25 sterling rearend, a C6 and so on and so on. I am really stoked about this truck!

The 1994 351 has the roller cam in it and I know I can make this 351 run like a top due to my SBF experience. I don't have any IDI experience. I did own a powerstroke for a couple years, but I didn't really mod it (didn't have too). I have heard that these IDIs are just rattle boxes compared to powerstrokes and that there basically won't be much gain from swapping out my 351 for an IDI 7.3.
I am looking at a set of heads (gt40s 2.20in and 1.90 ex port polished), set of roller rockers ( 1.72s for a better lift) and long tube headers (I already own). I can put these items on over a weekend and make my SBF make hp in the upper 200s maybe 300 with bigger injectors. I would be adding a supercharger next year. I would think a super charged modified 351W would spank an IDI.

Sounds like you need to just use the 85 diesel truck for your towing and play time is with the 94 gas

If the 85 was a dually from the factory you will have to swap axle housings, the factory don't use spacers.
A dually axle is 4" wider than a SRW axle is measured backplate to backplate.

If you swap housings, you loose your speedo because the 94 model has a speedo pickup in the rear axle.

The 85 speedo is cable driven from the transfer case.

Too bad you are so far away, if the 85 cab and frame are in good shape I would love to have them.
