Factory wheel width Pref.

16 ?

17 ?

20 ?

20+

Your reason and why.

I just swapped my 17" 5 spoke for 20" 5 spoke and Goodyear Wranglers, I had Toyo AT's.

The reason i swapped is to use DR's 2.5" level kit and keep from going 4" to run 35's in the future.

Every aftermarket wheel i looked at had less backspacing and thus required more lift since the trie would hit the fenderwell.

It should be perfec once the suspension gets here.

I don't understand your question, but most stock wheels are in the 8" range. Usually tire width is the deciding factor. Wider tires donut less on wider wheels.

I beleive the factory 16s and 17s were 7" wide, and the 18s and 20s are 8" wide.

I'm with you though ReAX, I don't know if he's asking a question or making a statement.

7 seems narrow, 7.5 would be the narrowest stock on the 16" wheels. Probably 8.5-9" on the 20" wheels. It's an all educated guess though.

I have the factory 20" rims and they are 8" wide (my Toyos call for 8.5" wide rims, but they seem to be wearing fine).

My apologies fellas, i meant height not width.

are <20" any more desirable vs. >=20"

I.E. should I have gotten money for my 17 vs. paying more for the 20".

That's all

I don't like any aftermarket wheels, so I shop by tires. 18"+ tires will cost 2-4 times what 16" tires will.

The only point I see in upgrading the wheels, is to fit bigger rotors.

Dlinzy...

I think the answer to your question really comes down to personal preference. For me I like a nice ratio of sidewall to rim, so for 18" wheels I like 35" tires and for 20" wheels I like 37" tires. The main reasons being looks and having a decent sidewall tends to help smooth out the ride.

The 20" wheels you picked up, are they factory 20's?

Yes, large 5 spoke about 4" wide polished.

Again to keep the offset correct as to keep water / mud off the truck, hate the Indy car look...

Came with Goodyear wrangler AT's with 90% tread left.

Paid 500 difference and my tires were at the wear indicators.

I'll go to Toyo's 325 60 20's when needed and DR's 2.5" kit is enroute.

Well factory 20's are a good choice and will look fine with 35" tires. The only problem I see is that the wheels being 20X8 are too narrow to run a 325/60R20 (9.5" min rim width). 35X12.50R20 would be a much better/safer choice.

Also it is not necessary to make any suspension modifications to run 35" tires on your truck, especially when using factory rims. They will clear just fine as the truck sits stock. But being you are installing the DR 2.5" kit, I would be looking at 37" tires as they will fit with a leveling kit. Personal preference ofcourse.

PowerstrokeHD, I have been told that you have to run 6" or bigger lift to fit 37" tires on the 05-up Super Duty. This came straight from the guys at Truck Toyz Performance, who I was buying my lift and tires from. They said 37" tires will rub when the axle is flexed with the 4.5" lift.

But yes, 35x12.5R20 tires fit the factory 20" rims fine, as that is what I am running. (they will sit slightly outside the wheel well and throw stuff on the side of the truck though).

Hey Beerstalker, I am not going to say that Truck Toyz is totally wrong and I would not recommend it for the extreme off-roader. But 37X12.50R18 or 20 tires will fit on factory wheels if the truck is equipped with the snow plow package (6000# springs) or a leveling kit. Yes they just rub the frame a bit and you need to pull the fender liner back a bit. So is it perfect, no, but it works to some peoples satisfaction who are looking to fit the biggest tires possible.

It is no different than many people telling me that I could not fit a 35" tire on my stock height '04 F-250. But I have been running a 35X12.50R18 on factory rims, at stock height, for over 10K now with nothing that I consider a problem.

My landscaper who also does Ag. drainage/irrigation is running his truck with Pro Comp Extreme M/T 37X12.50R20 out in the farm fields with no problems and I also have a guy at work that we set up with BFG A/T 37X12.50R18 on his daily driver.

Here is a example (not someone I know personally) of fitment on a 350 with snow plow package and BFG M/T 37X12.50R18. Not the greatest pic, but atleast it is somthing. This guy does off-road his truck!
