I have a 2002 SD Lariat with the leather seats. The lumbar support no longer works. I can turn the **** and nothing happens. I found the cable running up to the seat back and after searching on the forum it appears it is a problem in the seat back. How hard is i t to remove the covering from the seat? I have the arm rest on the right side and that would need to come off. I hate to see what the stealership wants for it. Any ideas?
No one wants to talk to you because your a CornHusker Fan. No just playing. I personally do not know how one would fix it, I guess the best bet would be to just tear into it and pull off the cover to see what you can do, If you cant get it back on Im sure an apolstry shop could put it back on, better yet Im sure they could fix the whole thing cheaper than the dealership. Ive come to the conclusion that the dealership is a overcharging parts replacer. In your case I would not want to replace that at the dealership. One more option would be to find a doner seat from a junk yard, any one with lumbar would be fine then you could take your seat cover off and put it on the doner. obviously the seat would need to be similar to yours.
Good Luck
just a guess here.. but I would imagine that plastic cover on the back snaps off (ever other interior piece does). Hopefully thiss would give access to the cable. If not, I would second what flyboy said and take it to an apohlstery shop.
i had the same problem. took to dealer while under warranttee and they had to remove the cover and get an upolstry shop to sew it back together. worked great for another 6 months then it broke again. now it isn't under warrantee anymore. is this a common problem on the xlt seats?
I replaced one on the driver's seat of my '02 F-250, very easy fix. The seat back contains a piece that resembles a back bone with ribs, some are plastic and some are metal. To be on the safe side it is best to remove ( or at least look at yours so you can order the correct one). Put the seat in its forward most position and look under the backrest portion of the seat, the upholstery should be held to together with two interlocking plastic channels, push them towards each and seperate them. With that done you can look into the back of the seat and see the lumbar piece. Mine had a plastic piece but when I ordered it I got sent the metal one. I was able to use the metal one by transferring some of the parts over. Once you see it will all make sense to you. The only thing needed to remove it from the seat was a pair of pliers.
If you have any questions I will try to answer them best as I can. Don't be afraid of it because there is nothing you can break with the exception of your wallet if you go to the dealer.
thanks! will go out to survey the damage tomorrow. i was hoping there was a way to get into the seat without having to unstitch any seat covering....sounds like there may be!
