Question Reman Engine with a few ?'s

Well I am in need of another 390 but this time just a stock one. The cheapest one I found was 1500.00 from S&S. But just for giggles I contacted my friend who works at one of the oldest ford dealerships around here. They happen to have a Genuine Ford remanufactured 390 they want 1200.00 but if I forgoe the warranty they will take 900.00. would this just be asking for problems? The tag says May 2 1990 , is it just to old to use? Should I maybe put new valve stem seals in the heads? Its called a long block on the tag but has the intake manifold , valve covers , timing chain cover and oil pan already installed so it has not been exposed to dust.

Is that a GPD long block? Genuine Parts Distributors (Tomador Engine Co) was Fords Authorized rebuilders for many years (Ford itself didn't rebuild the engine). Based in Los Angeles, they serviced the 11 Western states. Their engines have better quality parts than what is found at autozone, etc. Crank is prolly .010/.010, bore is 20 or 30 over. GPD engines didn't come with the manifold and valve covers. It's not too old to use, if you don't want it, I know someone that does. Wonder if someone was building something, then left the dealership. Trying to think of the oldest dealer in your area (Norcal). Must be in N off 33.

If it's remanufactured it should have been mostly all redone and checked out so it should be a fine motor to use.

Remanned in 90 I'd think the rear seal is rubber. About the only real concern I'd have. The valve guide seals are easy enought to deal with after the fact if they become a problem...unless you just want to get it overwith..

Spritz with mystery oil and go!!!

not sure if its GPD it has a green and white tag with a ford logo in the center that says authorized remanufactured engine. the engine was for a 76 f-350 that was never paid for so the engine was never installed. one fo the oldest dealers around here is Bill Brandt Ford

Green and white are the GPD colors. Personally, I'd grab it. AFAIK, there are no more FE's being rebuilt under the Ford banner. Oldest Ford dealer in CA under the same ownership is I believe, Patchettes in Newman. I know where B is. I cleaned out all the NOS parts from these dealers in the 1970's and 80's.
