i thought thats were the nuetral safety+overdrive selenoid plug in. The wires in question come off the frame rail wiring harness, that goes to the rear on the drivers side. There are two wires that seem to reach ONLY between the transfer case, and the shift linkage. Also this tranny has either been rebuilt or replaced at some point. but am shure its an a4ld. did the position of the back up lights switch ever change?

not that i know of..but the back up light plug size did. I put a reman trans in my bronco last spring. I have a 86 auto with the floor shifter. Well the one they sent me was set up for a later model with a column shift. Not only did my floor linkage not work the reverse light plug wouldn't plug in..the new one seems like it's bigger. The neutral safety switch sits higher then the reverse light plug. The neutral safety switch is a round connector with lots of "pins" on it. The 4wd plug is in the rear of the trans on top of the transfer case.

so just below the nuetral safety switch is the backup switch. I will have to check down the line, must be series circuit. I do apriciate the help, very much. My new rig used to be home to a family of mice that loved to chew on wires aperently. I've already rewired lots of things.
