TRANSMISSION SHOT: DEALER or AAMCO?

My tranny is finally shot. Engine still strong after 249,000+ miles. So now the decision is whether to have the dealership (I think they said factory reman.. ..about $3,700.00) or AAMCO rebuild my existing one for about $2,600.00 then pay another $400 for the 3 year/36,000 warranty. (Ford says its warranty is 3yr/75,000 mi.)
Anyway, need to get on this quick, want to hear any feedback on this for anyone who's gone through this.
...and I apologize (in advance) if there's something in a recent post about this exact issue, I usually spend 3 or so hours reading many, many posts but didn't have time with this. Gotta go work.. ..got a tranny to pay for!
Thanks again.

By the way, ..'99 PSD, 4X4

If you really need it now, I would trust a dealership tranny over an AAMCO unit. If there's a possibility that you can wait for one, get a BTS. Best transmission you can get. http://www.brianstruckshop.com/

Check out Jasper, they do good work and stand behind them. Check with Better Business to see if you’re local AAMCO has any bad references. Whatever you do stay with a large name outfit or with FORD. I can tell you of some not so good experiences with rebuilders. Make sure the warranty includes labor. They wore me down once. Transmission warranty was good, they would supply one within a reasonable time but the labor was mine and about Trans #5 I sold the car.

Yeah the BTS is one heck of an insurance package. I've heard nothing but mixed reviews on Jasper. Sounds like quality control varies substantially from one to the next. I got about 40K out of both my stock trannies. Baloney. Like Mako sez . . . then you wake up.

id do the ford because the dealerships are almost everywhere.and you'll have less runaround.im not try to talk down on BTS or Jasper.its just how far you might have to go to get major/minor problems fixed.

I have a stick, but if both my legs fell off I'd get a BTS.

Ford. The company that gave us that oh-so-wonderful diode in the 01 trucks. Jasper. Do you feel lucky? I'll pass and go with BTS. He is not going to care if you burnt it out drag racing or just putzing around town. He fixes them for next to nothing even when the 2 yr warranty is up. What do you think I have in my Ex?

The 2001 Models built for August 2000 to March 2001 are the ones with a mechanical diode, all other models have a 34 element sprag from the factory. All Monster Boxes, irregardless of year are built with the 45 element sprag assembly. A mechanical diode is one form of a one way clutch. When the E4OD came out in 1989, it had a sprag one way clutch on the top of the direct drum, and it worked great for 12 years. So Ford in 2001 changed it to the mechanical diode, which didn't work great and after literally 8 days, they realized it was not going to work. The only problem was that all the tooling for the original sprag was destroyed already and it took Ford 6 months to get new machines to go back to the way that they always were. The units built during those 6 months are the diode units. The diode has a different clutch plate pattern, different direct drum and an integral race. To replace one with a sprag, you need to replace all these parts.

Where do you live?

if you can get to Oklahoma City Call Jon Faubion (Faubion Motorsports)
If you can get to Arkansas go to BTS,
Sun coast has a good name also
If you can't get to either order the BTS and see if Brian can recommend anyone in your area to install it.

If you go to the dealer, we'll see you back here again when you blow that torque converter or something else. Plus the fact that you are spending the same amount of money (you said $3,700) that you would spend on an aftermarket tranny that would have a much stronger torque converter, better coast clutches, better shaft, better valve body, etc. As my Grandpa would say "do it right the first time, or don't do it at all." The dealers warranty doesn't compare. Don't fall for the stupid advertisments about Ford approved parts & crap.

We just installed the heavy hauler tranny from Ford, 3 year 75,000 mile warranty. Better then waiting three weeks for a BTS and it will hold up to 400hp.

I stand corrected,

CSIPSD - I didn't know about the Ford Heavy Hauler tranny option - I was assuming stock was the only dealer option.
