You absolutely need to reset the timing.

You also can use a slightly bigger plug gap but the timing needs to be at least checked.

regards,

Rick

After converting my 292 to Pertronix, I slightly adjusted the timing as well. I had some trouble starting it since I had removed the ballast resistor it had and finally found it wrapped in the black tape and wire I had removed. Oops! I did manage to find a different style at a local parts store but it worked the same. I did convert to 8mm wire cap from the 7mm it had before. It starts up and sounds great.

where would i look for ballest. do i understand that you have a ballest and that is the correct way w/ the pentronix. do you think the larger wires help w/ starting. i reset the timing but it still seems hard to start, but runs great when started. i want to make sure elec. is set up right before screwing around w/ choke, carb. etc. thanks for reply, mike

I believe that urs is a 6 volt system and mine is a 12 volt. Dont know if u ordered it way b/c ur year required it. But if urs didnt have a resistor to begin with then I dont think there's a need to put one on. Hope some of the guys that r familiar with the set up can help enlighten both of us on this one. Mine had one and would not start up at all. After realizing that a resistor was on it and after I found, I put it on and it cranked up like a charm. Since the resistor's wires were too short, I figured I would try to get a new one and install it. Luckily, the parts store found one and it worked.
Now about the 8mm wires. There was a string on here some years back that showed how to do the conversion. I may still have the site and post it on here later today for u to look at. It's rather simple and u need a donor truck for the conversion. I found plenty of the part needed at a local junkyard for a few bucks. After converting the wires, the truck cranked up better and seemed to run stronger.

yes you are right it is a 6v. pos. ground. engine was replaced by p.o. but was left w/ 6v. i don't want to convert. at this time everything is in good shape. i did order pertronix 6v. for 292 & also ordered correct coil from them. i thought if everything matched i would have no trouble. i am really interest in 8m. wires if you can help i would appricate it. thanks mike

7mm to 8mm wire conversion on 6 volt system?

Mike, I tried to search for the article but no luck. I'll check at home and see if I can get the site and post on here later this weekend. It's a rather simple conversion but the pictures on the article will help a whole lot to get this done. It isnt that expensive to do. Another thing, I don't think that it should matter that ur system is 6 volts. Perhaps some of the guys here can help us out with the this question.

Yes. All for a 302 engine. It should fit the 292 distributor like the article says. I printed the article and took it with me to junkyard. The yard i went to had lots of ditributors lying around. Many of the spacers were broken or cracked and I just looked for one that was in decent shape. I also took two rotors. One is short and the other longer. I fiited them to see wich fit and then when to the auto parts store and bought a new one. I also took a flat 8mm cap from the distributor and made sure it fit the spacer. You might get lucky and find all the three at once. The cap and rotor are easily bought at any auto parts store as well as the wires. Just make sure you keep the old wires from your current 292 engine so that you can measure the longest with an 8mm replacement set. Let the parts guy know that all u need is a set to fit the 302 Ford engine. Good Luck

Also, dont forget to get the firing order right. I had to ask the guys here for help when I crossed the wires. Unless u have the diagram for the 292 engine, you will have a difficult time. so make note of the wires before u take them off!! Maybe tag the wires with numbers on masking tape and mark ur old cap with a black marker or something before removing them. Whatever works best for u. The other option is to search on this site for "firing order of 292". Print out the page and have it ready for back up. Good Luck
