Question 51 Ford F6 Emergency Brake.

The emergency brake was worn down to where the only thing left but the rivets. Is there a place to get the new lining or do they sell the whole round portion together? Also since it was worn into the rivets can you turn the watcha macal it or the drum portion on the back of the tranny?

You should be able to get that relined. A good autoparts store or truck shop should be able to set you up. How deep are the scrapes in the watcha macal it? (love the techincal term) If they aren't really deep I wouldn't even worry about it. It's been my experience that these brakes are better for "parking" than "emergencies".

Well maybe they were just parking brakes. I guess I just called them that because thats what they are called on modern day cars. I will take it over to napa today and see what they tell me.

I ditched mine when I wen twith newer engine and gearbox. Then built my own as a disc brake parking brake. Many aftermarkets do mechanical disc brakes. I used the rear disc brake caliper off a Taurus and a brake disc from an MGB. Build a bracket, modify the disc, adapt handle to caliper and after a 85 quick hours I am finished.

I took mine to dover brake just now. He will reline it for $60.00 and it will be done on Friday. I think I will just leave the drum portion alone. I think the only good way to clean it up would be on a lathe.

That type of a brake that you are refering to, is probably better used as a parking brake. Reason being uf you pulled that on say at 30 mph you would most likely lose the drive shaft, then is bail out time.
As a parking brake they do one hell of a job.

I really did not plan on using it as an emergency brake. It just mispoke. I will use it as a parking brake. Dover brake called it is ready for pickup.
