Anyone use a bike rack?

As you can see from my forum name (Tarmac) I am an avid road cyclist, I should say if you ride you might have made the connection Anyway these trucks are too big for my old method of transporting my bike (roof rack) and I don't care to use a hitch style. Anyone have a bike rack that fits the bed, if so what type and where did you buy it?

They make some really nice bed mounts. Check Thule, Yakima and even Saris (the makers of the PowerTap - can you tell I cycle too).

I chose a hitch mount from Yakima and enjoy it. When I have my Undercover tonneau on, I can just load my bike in the bed and seal it up.

BTW, what do you ride? I have a GT Xizang mountain bike (Ti frame - custom built when I was in college working at a shop) and a Orbea Spirit Carbon (with a PowerTap and extra goodies).

Thumbs up Nice bikes!

As a roady I really like the Orbea stuff, you dog! I ride a Specialized Tarmac SL, this is their top of the line bike and a really, really special ride. I run an all Dura Ace set up and Ksyrium sl wheels.

Nice, I am a Campy man. I run Chorus with a Chris King fron hub 28 hole radial on Mavic Open Pro CD, my rear is the same rim with the PowerTap.

You have a nice ride, is that the same frame Gerolsteiner ran this year?

Yes it is the same frame:

Although I decided to go with the black and red color. You would expect someone who owns a particular item to be excited about it BUT, the "SL" frame is really special, amazing actually. On another subject...someone who has a handle like flyfishtn probably wets a line from time to time? I have two bad (expensive) habits, cycling and bass fishing. FYI

If you have a little bit of woodworking (or welding) ability you can save alot of money and design your own carrier system to suit your needs. Just a thought that's what I did.

thule 501 insta-gater truck bike rack rocks!

You might want to check out the Thule 501 Insta-Gater truck bike rack. It's super hot and has got to be the easiest and quickest bike rack to load your bike in. It cleverly mounts in between the end of the pickup bed and the tailgate and is locked into place when the tailgait is closed. You can also use a Thule lock to lock the bike inside the bike rack. The only modification I'd suggest is if you plan to do alot of dirt roads or off-roading in your truck then strap a bungee cord over top of the rear real and hook to the truck bed side rails so the bike doesn't ever bounce up and down when you hit bumps and stuff.

I went with the Rennicks biketote http://www.biketote.com/catalog/ . Found out about it at the Hotter than Hell 100. Its made of aluminum and I have never had a problem with rust as I did with other skewers. It worked out well for me since I can put it in my SUV as well as the back of the truck.

I took a quick release style mount from my local bike shop for $25 and mounted it to a 2x6 board. I lay the board right up at the end of the bed so when I shut the tailgate it up against it. My bike fits perfect. Been on pretty far rides and it doesn't budge.

i have a rack that goes into the hitch....

i also have a rack i made for in the bed....pretty easy...

take a 2x4 or 2x6 or 2x8 and put in the bed slot....then attach a quick release to the 2xwhatever you choose then take the front tire off and attach the fork to the 2xwhatever and you done....if your going far and you have a 6.5 bed or larger then i took a peice or rope and ran it from the back tie-downs through the rim and to the other back tie down and the bike didn't budge once...

i did something very similar--treated 2X6, notched to fit snug up against the front of the bed, mounted yakima fork mounts in it for 2 bikes...i can just pull it out until i need it
