What do you recommend for a bike rack? Straps, hitch, ball mounts? what is the best as reliability and not damaging my truck. I have a ball mounted in my bumper but not a hitch thing.
There's several models on ebay but not sure wich one to choose, please help.
I prefer my hitch mounted bike rack over everything else. I haven't used mine for a while but I think it was made by Reese. It holds 4 bikes, will pivot away from the vehicle to allow access to the cargo area without having to remove the bikes and has an extension to the part that comes out of the hitch to allow for a trailer ball to be installed so that I can still tow a tent trailer while carrying up to 4 bikes on the rack. I paid about $130 for it last year. I put on a couple thousand miles all over Colorado with 4 bikes on it last year and didn't have a single problem.
Thanks for the light on this matter. Me and my wife just came back from vacation time in Colorado, Breckenridge, to be more precise. It was delightful. We saw many bikers and bike racks on cars that we wanted to go into this bike sport. That's why I was asking.
Breckenridge is where we stayed. We were there one year ago this week. The upper 50s for highs were a pleasant change from the 115s we were getting in Phoenix.
I have a hitch mounted bike rack also. It is great. I got it at Target for like $100. It is a four bike rack also. It works great. Since you don't have a receiver hitch installed not sure what you could do. I know the ones you buy for the top of your roof rack are pretty spendy, at least around here so you might be better off buying and installing a reciever hitch and then getting a receiver hitch bike rack. That way if you pull anything with your Explorer you already have your receiver hitch. Just a thought.
