I'm thinking of trying to hang my bikes on the back door (up and down) using a yakima/thule setup that i'm thinking of hangin from the tops of the doors. Has anyone seen this? I couldn't find it anywhere on the forums, but i'm gonna try Sportsmobile forum too since they do lots of interesting bike mounts.
My problem with a roof rack is height, it's WAY up there on top of an e350 with a bike standing on top.
Used a simple homemade bike rack that fit the 2" hitch receiver on my last Club Wagon. Had a simple DIY bike rack for my 1st Econoline, mounted on front bumper.
Never even considered bike rack on roof. Sounds like a royal PITA.
I used hitch-mounted bike racks, but the best setup I like was -- 4-bike roof rack mounted across on top of a storage box, which was mounted on the hitch.
The Thule Revolver 964 is the one to have, it's a hitch-mount that swings out of the way for rear access. Expensive, around $450.
I've thought about ways to do this too, hanging bikes from the rear doors. You could bolt a normal fork-mount (like the Rocky Mounts Clutch - $15) to the top of the door. Very securely, maybe even weld it. The rear wheel would hang down & could be bungee-corded to the bumper, just something to keep it from swinging around.
In theory you could mount 4 bikes this way by offsetting the handlebar angles 10 degrees. The really nice thing is they wouldn't affect gas mileage at all.
Downsides - don't get rear-ended
Not sure how much weight you could hang on the door frame reliably, that's the biggest question.
Yep, that Thule Revolver is sweet, but I have other things I need the hitch for, like a cargo rack that always has firewood or coolers on it. I'm currently adding on to my rear rack, making a box out of it, and I'm gonna put my roof rack on top of it, similar to what Henry10s is talking about. I'll post pics soon.
