Like plowhand said you should check the injector orings.

white smoke= unburnt fuel = non detonating cylinder = cold cylinder = bad glow plug system......

OR maybe since it happens when its cold, after he shuts hes truck off at night, all the excess full pressure is bleeding off through the bad injector orings and settleing in the cylinders. and then once he starts it in the morning all that unburnt fuel is creating white smoke and then all that extra fuel is burnt up the white smoke stops.

But 1997 you do make another good point.
