white smoke question.

My idi just received a fresh fuel filter and a double dose of white diesel kleen and a grey bottle treatment on the previous tank. My problem is i still get an exmassive amount of smoke on start up. And Im concerned about the color. I've never owned an idi in the cold before. I bought this truck over the summer. Should i be worried? Sometimes when parked outside and its 40 or below she will smoke for about 10 seconds and idle rough for about the same amount of time.

Sometimes its a greyish white smoke. It seems that this hasn't happened until cold weather hit.

Could be a bad injector, could be injection pump timing.

after glow may not be working

it might be normal,but be sure to test your glow plugs.
when your wtsl goes out,start it right up.do you get several more clicks on the relay? if you can't hear them,just watch the volt gauge.it should swing back and forth for a few secs after you just started it.this is the controller sending out power on/off to the plugs to help keep the engine running smooth and it reduces he white smoke.
if you don't think you have this after glow working,you can trace it out.if your mistakenly waiting for all the clicks and volt meter action to come to a stop before starting your truck,stop doing that lol.start it right up as soon as the light goes out.
cold starting the idi;
1.turn the key to run so the glow plugs warm.the electric fuel pump should now be running for those who installed one.
2.while waiting for the wtsl to go out,press the throttle all the way to the floor and let back up.this sets the high idle solenoid.
3.as soon as the wtsl goes out,start the engine.
(some claim holding half throttle while cold starting helps.it makes no difference at all to my engine,yet i find myself experimenting with it all the time still for the fun of it lol) directly after startup which should happen within only 1-3 seconds when everything is working properly (depending on how cold it is) you should clearly hear the fast idle is set,you should clearly hear the cold advance solenoid is on by greatly increased diesel rattle over a warmed up engine,and for a few seconds,you should also have after glow of the gp system,clearly seen visibly via the volt gauge swinging a half dozen times or so for a few seconds.when all is functioning as it should,the engine should start actually better than a gas engine in severe cold (because they have no cold assist like we do/factory.) depending on outside temp,a little white smoke from the tail pipe for a few seconds is completely normal but should clear up within a few seconds.

tip for those with manual push button;
you can mimic the afterglow system when temps are low,by simply pushing and releasing your button right after start up close enough by pushing your button on/off for about 2 seconds on/2 seconds off,for about 6 times or as needed to help have a smoother running cold diesel.especially helpful tip if you have stall out issues,or even just large clouds of white smoke on first cold start up.

I agree with all of this, but I need to ask if you have checked the glow plugs? Sometimes 1 bad plug will not make the controler "short cycle", The engine will start good,but you will have the rough idle and white smoke untill there is enough heat in that cylinder to make the fuel ignite. A simple check of the glows costs you nothing but your time, and if they check out you can move on to the timing or injectors.

I think it sounds pretty normal.

Mine will blow white smoke for a bit on cold mornings. This morning it was in was about 20*F and it smoked. Took about a minute, maybe two for the smoke to completely go away. It would probably smoke less but my high idle/cold advance it currently non-functional.
