7.3L diesel won't accelerate

I have a '96 F-250 7.3L TID, 225,000 miles. I've been having a starting problem for several weeks so I finally addressed it. Several parts were failing/about to fail so I've put in new injector wiring harness (the ends were burning and melting), both ontop of the motor and under the valve covers, a new glow plug controller, a new positive battery lead and a new fuel filter.

Now the truck fired right up and idled smoothly. It accepted throttle, BUT it won't accelerate. It is slow and smooth even though my foot's at full throttle.

I am new to the diesel world, and bought this truck knowing it needed some work. Does it take a while to purge the air out after a fuel filter change? Or do I need to look at something else.

Thanks,

J

so will the motor rev or just idle? if it only idles there is a problem with the tps or ivs (idle validation switch) which are located on the throttle pedal. if it revs but has no power make sure you hooked up the map sensor line (probably unhooked while do the valve cover work)

The motor revs, but no power

The motor is reving, but just not developing any power. So if I floor it I'll eventually get to 60 MPH, but it takes a good 20 - 30 seconds to get to 60.

Where is the map sensor connection?

passenger side on the fire wall right on top of the heater box. the line is a rubber hose that comes from the intake y to the sensor and there is an electrical connector that goes to the map sensor also. i am pretty sure its not hooked up according to your description. (i know cause i did it once myself)

Got it solved. The hose that comes from the map sensor to the manifold was broken. I pulled the end off at the manifold side, cut it back an inch and re-seated it on the little nipple opening. Boom, problem solved...lots of acceleration. It must have been leaking like crazy so the turbo was never kicking in. Thank you very much for the troubleshooting help.

I have the exact same problem with my 97, but it is an E series. What does the map sensor look like? Is it in the same place in a van?

Edit: I just found a picture of one in a parts catalog. It looks something like the baro on my IDI. I know where it is. If the hose is good, is there a way to test it?
Would it show up as a code?

jugheadz glad to hear your up and running again.

black the valve you see is the exhaust bakpressure valve that is used faster warm ups in the cold weather. it is actuated by the rod hooked to it don't know if it should be moved by hand or not i have never tried.

black i would recommend creating a new post with more specific info then you will have others attention and i will be sure to help out also.

list the exact problem when it happens, also info about your truck year, miles, tranny, any mods.

hope that helps and i am looking forward to help resolve your problem also one thing that helps is the title of you post. things like "i have a problem/question" are not helpful. post it as "low power no passing gear" or something like that that explains your issue.

That's the EBPV, Exhaust Back Pressure Valve. You should search this forum for more info.

If you don't get what you're lookin for start a new thread.
