skyjacker 6in questions

i just bought this lift for my 79 f250 300 4spd, just can't put it on for awhile. anyway i was wondering if you guys running the same setup could let me know what gears you are running for 36 or 38 in tires and if the driveline needs any other mods. driveshafts, crossover steering any other surprises out there. i am mainly trying to get everything now, i am currently in afghanistan and when i get home i have 1month to get to colorado, add this up to a couple of other projects i have to get ready and drive cross country i will be probably too busy to order alot of parts thanks in advance-joe

front driveline needs lengthened, the rear could use it too but isn't a necessity immediately. gears just depends on how much power you want to experience. that 6 anger with 4.10's may be a tad on the gutless side, so that entails a gear change or a motor upgrade.. my friend runs a 400m with 4.10 gears and a 4 speed on a 78 f250 and it's pretty decent on power. has 40 inch tires... i run 38's with the same setup just a 360 and it is probably liveable for most people but i like to be able to smoke tires in any gear so it's getting the upgrade soon.. :-p on your condensed time frame i'd say lift it and run it til you have more time to tear into axles and such... make sure you have the drop pitman arm and drop draglink. it makes the steering esy to deal with. thanks fordraceboy thats about what i was looking for, i do have the skyjacker drag link, pitman arm, shocks and a dual steering stabilizer. i just need to get it running to drive on a trailer and back off i will try to do some wheeling before i decide on gears, engine swaps and so on. the air is thinner up at altitude so i need to see what effect that will have also.

For 36-38" tires, depending on what you use the truck for, but 4.56-4.88 gears sound about right.

I have 36.8" tires on my 79 Bronco, and I have 4.56 gears, but then too, it is a off road vehical(mostly and about 10% street).

I just did the 6" Skyjacker system on my supercab. Rear driveshaft is fine as far as length goes but I have a 2 piece shaft with a carrier bearing and if I am not mistaken regular cabs have a 1 piece. The pinion angles will need some work, on the rear the pinion is slightly up from center and you want it even or slightly down. On the front the angle is worse, almost putting the joint at the pinion into a bind. I am going to try some wedges to see if it will help the angles. It should work fine on the rear, not to sure on the front.I did not use the extended brake lines, I made new brackets and relocated the lines where then needed to be, plenty of slack to do that. I have done it that way on more trucks than I can remember, this way if you snag or break a line there is no waiting for parts thru the mail you just run to the closest auto parts store and buy a stock part. Im running a 460 , C-6 and 4.10's and its fine with a 37" tire. I wanted to keep the rpms at a reasonable level on the highway and the 460 has more than enough power to make up for the hit in gearing. The 300 makes a decent amount of torque but I would have to agree on the 4.56 gears, 4.88's may be a bit much on the highway for you. Overall I am happy with the lift, I think it rides better than it did before. You may want to start hitting all the nuts and bolts with PB blaster or WD-40 now so it helps any rusted parts come apart when you are ready to install it.

if you are going to put a wedge in for angle shimming, be sure to find steel ones and not the cheap aluminum ones. the aluminum ones have a tendency to wallow out under braking forces on the front axle, causing them to wiggle loose and pop out if neglected, easier just to find good steel ones and forget about em...

I shimed my front axle that helped a little bit, I still blew the CV. Then I put in a high angle driveline CV. No problems yet.

i used to run the same kit....if i did it over again....instead of blowing the 150 bucks on the drop draglink, i would have just went to crosso ver steering to begin with. if your going to wheel the truck you NEED at least 3* shims up front, and you will still want to clearance the yoke a bit with a grinder...remeber the front axle twists down in foward motion.

i would reccomend the extended brakelines too. rear d-shaft should be ok, but front will be on the shortside...

is your front a dana 44 or 60? it will be much eaier to do crossover on a dana 60

for 38's i would run 4.56's with that 300, 35-36 just stick with 4.10's

also, dont waste the $$ on a dual stabilizer....the stock single is all you need, duals just mask problems and add extra weight etc....you could put that money into somethign more useful

I have this kit too, like everyone said, the rear shaft is fine, the front will be short but workable like they said, the gap on the front shaft will decrease if you have or are putting in a d60 front which you should do if your putting 38's on, you could get away with the d44 with 36" tires though. I would personally sugest the d60 if your gonna push it hard. Depending on your use on/off road or strictly off road the gears probably b 4.56 or 4.88. I got a bender and relocated my brake linesbut longer ones aren't a bad idea. Good luck, you'll love the results.
