Steering Box similarity 73-79 2X4 & 4X4?

I Am Just Curious If The Power Steering Box Is The Same On A 2x4 And 4x4 In The 73-79 Series F-250? I Have A 2wd 74 F-250 That Is Complete And Running But Have It Only For Parts. My Project Is A 71 F-250 4x4 That I Am Modifying With A Power Steering Set Up From A 73-79. As Long As I Have All The Parts I'll Be Ok On The Installing Just Don't Know If They Are Diffenent. Any Other Feedback Will Be Welcomed!!!!

actually, the f250 4x4 box is the one that most people who do the power steering conversion use. you should be good to go.

The best way to SEE the Difference between 2wd<<and>>4wd for a f250 PS box is to have your local parts house PULL a rebuilt ps box for a 78-79 year model truck.........sk

Go look at "Highboy70" gallery. He has a nice clean and easy setup. You should be able to use a 2wd box. I would think the biggest differences would be the 2wd box uses 3 mounting holes, and the 4wd 78/79 uses 4.

I am going to do the ps upgrade in October and plan on using the 2wd box.

I am also tinkering with the idea modifying the box like rock ram does and run the original Ford ram along with the new ps box.

I think the 2WD and 4WD F-150 use the three bolt steering box mount. The F-250 uses the 4-bolt mount.

...............Don't send a Teenager to do a Man's Job!!! The reason ...Ford....installed that big, heavy ps box was because of the Workload placed upon it. The 2wd will work but it Won't work as well or as long ...as the Correct PS box . Just my opinion , sk...

The two wheel drive PS boxes are cheap and plentiful. It probably comes down to how much you want to spend and what you might find in the wrecking yard.

If you spent a day wrecking yarding you could probably find alot of different boxes that would work. You could even use a Dodge..... aaakkk....... if you wanted to mount it to the outside of the frame.

I was looking at the PS box on the 98 international tractor I was driving today, it was exactly the same style setup as the manual ford box...... but it was power. Unfortunatly it is physically to big to fit. Probably too expensive also, not to mention the big hydraulic pump that runs it was bolted to the motor and probably chain or gear driven.

For the first half of '78 when Ford went to the 3 piece front end on the 4X4 they used a different box that is on the outside of the frame and has a longer turn worm gear that turned the frot end too sharp even with stock 15 " tires they would bite and grab on pavement . Great off road in tight spots and shorter turning radius but that is why they only built some and went back to the saginaw steering box on them .
