460 question...

Hello everyone!

I am thinking about buying a 460 engine out of a 1974 Mercury car to install into my 1979 F350 4x4 pickup (to replace a worn out 400M). The engine was rebuilt by a Ford dealership 10 plus years ago. It was ran for approx 10,000 miles and then pulled (they wrecked the car). It has been sitting in (inside) storage since 1990 or so. It is complete, from carb, to pan including all the brackets, belts, pulleys, hoses, PS pump, alternator, and wires. The AC bracket is there but the pump is not. Under the dust, it is very clean, no oil stains etc etc. There is light surface rust here and there (all the paint is still there and looks good). The motor does have a smog pump, I will be removing that.

I guess my questions are:

1. What are the draw backs of this motor, as far as it bing out of a car?

2. Can I assume that the heads came with hard seats because of the smog pump? When I remove the pump, what is the best way to plug the holes in the heads where the air is blown in?

3. What kind of rocker arms am I likely to find? Are they what I want? If not can they be replace easily?

4. I have heard that there are differences in the connecting rods of car engines as compaird to truck engines is this so?
If so should I change them to truck rods, or will they work O.K.?

5. I plan on replacing the stock 4bbl intake and FOMOCO (read holley) carb with a Edelbrock Preformer 0-3500 RPM intake and Performer carb. Someone told me that a 650 CFM carb would be enough for a 460 as long as you run it 4000 RPM or less. Is that true? I always thought that anything over 400 CID needed the 750 CFM carb.

6. I know I will need new motor mounts, exaust manifolds, and a rear sump oil pan (and oil pickup), will I also need a new oil dipstick tube? Does someone have the Ford part numbers for the oil pan, pickup, and dipstick tube.

7. I will most likely get the L&L motor mounts. Has anyone out there bought any of the other L&L brackets? (the ones that let you use your 351/400 alternator, PS pump, and AC compressor)
How well do they work? Are they worth the money?

Thats all I can think of for now, Thanks to all in advance.

Dan
