Question 99 eb 5.4 with infamous overdrive shudder, not the norm a must read

i have 99 eddie bauer 5.4l with a 4r100 transmission, did the whole filter fluid change and shudder still there, this is where it really gets good,i personally pulled the tranny and replaced the torque converter, not the best of jobs to do on these trucks.everything seemed fine for the last week and then while driving today when it shifts into overdrive theres that very noticeable shudder again, only lasts for a couple seconds but still there.came home and jacked it up to be sure i tightened the driveshaft, checked all u-joints everything feels tight and looked good.anybody ever experience or hear of this? im blown away, after all that work,it shudders again.could it be a defective new converter? what are the odds right.possibly a transfer case, differential problem, bad u-joints even though they feel good,im stumped here.any thoughts or possibilities would be greatly appreciated.im kinda leaning toward a defective converter but i really hope not, dont want to do that again.thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.when i figure this one out ill post the solution in case anyone else has this problem

i used valvoline mercon/dexron 3 and also added lubeguard to transmission and transfer case,so its definately not a fluid issue, already talked to my friend who is a transmission guy and he agreed with me that i had a defective torque converter so ill be pulling it out again this weekend.

That 4R100 requires straight Mercon, not MerconV. If it were mine, I would change the fluid to factory Mercon and see what it does.

eric, seems like you had quite an ordeal with fluid.thanks for the service bulletin,i didnt use mercon v,i used mercon/dexron 3 i think when they recommend not using multi-grade fluid theyre referring to the mercon/mercon v combinations which i didnt use.disassembled my expy again this weekend and will put in second new converter tonight along with a shift kit thats supposed to correct line pressure and soft shift issues with the 4r100 transmission, will post in a couple days with results.thanks again for the info

Even though these trannys SUPPOSED "state of the art" they STILL imploy the BANDS found in the trannys of years ago. Try dropping the pan and adjust the OD band. See if it works ???

We had a new '90 Plymouth Voyager (with no miles on it yet) that had a shudder as it went into overdrive and creeping to a stop, after 3 trannys, and the Chrysler rep telling me it was the tires, they finally replaced the mother board. We sold that van with 146,000 on it and just saw it 2 years later still on the road.

I was known at the dealer as the A604 Phantom!

the mercon/dexron3 is not the same as mercon. just buy straight mercon fluid.
