steering gear box

does anyone sell an aftermarket steering gear box for a 1956 F-100 2wd?

I am wanting to put power steering on this truck but the gear box needs to be replaced.

Is it a kit that i can buy that will replace the gear box and add power steering?

This project is going to be a long process but it will be perfect when i get done.

Thanks

Hi Brandon

A common conversion is the toyota truck PS box
Mid Fifty and probably others sell kits with the bits you need

Brandon,

Click on search near the top of the screen, then advanced search. Select the 48-60 Forum in the lower-right list box and then enter your search words in the upper-left box. Use something like +Toyota +Steering. The plus signs tell the search engine that the word MUST be in the result. You'll find quite a few threads that discuss the Toyota box and issues related to it like the hose fittings, etc. Enjoy.

Steering Conversion

Concur that you should search this site, ask a lot of questions, and learn from others' experiences. You'll find out there are many ways to get the conversion done. A lot depends on whether or not you keep your original engine. Some bracket design & fabrication may be required. If you put in a more modern V-8 or have a Y-block you can use an original bracket and power steering pump. If you use a Toyota gear box you will not be able to have your original horn button work with your original steering column. I added up the receipts for my p/s effort - $884.13 plus my own labor. Will be happy to share my parts/vendors list. Also have some photos in my gallery. Good luck.

There is also a non-power box Toyota trucks used between 79-84 on there 4wd trucks. I have talked to several guys who have used them and are happy. They run about 1/2 the cost of the power units.

My conversion ran ~ 500., but that included an Ididit tilt column and Grant banjo wheel. I didn't have to buy the HD tie rod or a pump and mount as they were already there on the truck from the earlier install of one of the ram power assist kits. I bought the box used for < 100.00. I also used Mid Fifty's conversion kit.
