Question Driver door key lock install, 56'

I am tired of crawling over the seat every day to lock and unlock the door (I drive her to work), so I bought a door lock and "lock install kit" from Mid Fifty. The template leaves much to be desired; anyone done this modification? Potential problems? How did you determine the correct position? How close to the perfect spot does it need to be?

Any advice?

Thanks very much, as always..

I haven't added one but it is critical that it be positioned correctly so that it interfaces with the latch mechanism inside the door. If you have one on the passenger door I would use it to get the location. How do the "Kits" attach the lock? The original lock uses a spring clip but I don't imagine the kit lock does. Seems the most difficult item would be cutting the irregular shaped hole. Sorry I'm not more help.

the kit does have a spring clip, the template they provide is a bit crude and shows the holes position relitive to the hole that would be there if I removed the door handle above. Is that easily removed?

The door handle is held on with two attachments....... a phillips head screw right behind the button part on the inside of the edge of the door jam, the other one is a 3/8" nut that you get to by reaching up inside the door through the removeable access panel. It is on the end opposite the button. Might want to squirt some WD-40 or Liquid Wrench on the nut if it hasn't been off recently.

If you have a Service Manual you might want to look at it for a better explanation.

Packrat, I am planning on making this mod as well. On my drivers door, it already has the hole in the edge of the door that the clip goes into. Not sure if yours does or not but I suspect it does. I was going to measure from this point as well as from the outside door handle to locate and drill the hole. I thought I would start with a smaller hole than needed and sneak up on it with a grinder.

Not sure if this helps at all but I know I have no intention of sliding over the seat each time I want to lock the door either!!

I took the lock off on the passenger side and made a template with some heavy paper. I then transfered the shape on the drivers side door with a sharpy marker. I drilled several 1/8" holes inside the drawing and cleaned it up with snips and a pencil grinder. The slot for the spring clip should already be there, to my knowledge all the doors were made with this slot. I used the slot to locate the new hole. The entire process was pretty easy and only too me about an hour.

I would measure up from the botom in from the back of the pass door. then transfer the measuerments to the drivers door. Then drill a small hole, and peek in to be sure it's in the center on the latch. If not use a round file to get there, then take an electrical knockout, and punch if out. Once the center is established the knockout can be moved a little if needed. Better than trying to drill it, because once the small hole is drilled your commited to open it up. Hope this all makes sense to you.

It's a small punch used to put holes in electrical panels. It leaves a nice round hole in the metal. Home Depot or any hardware store should carry them.

I did this modification on my 55, I just took a measurement from the bottom of the door; traced the driver's door key hole used a drill to drill tiny holes around the pattern and a file to get the exact contour it worked fine for me.
