Those Zinc, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Moly numbers are striking. Boron looks up there, too. Looks like the Valvoline Synpower additive is loaded with good stuff.

Ever since Flash posted the Zinc numbers for the Synpower several months ago, I've been adding a half a bottle to my SHO's 3.0L DOHC engine and the other half to my Ranger's 4.0L OHV during each oil change. This is probably going to be a ritual for me for now on in light of the new SM oil rating.

"Robust" is the word that comes to mind.

Yep, half a bottle seems like a good amount. The stuff will raise your viscosity, ballpark about 1 cSt for half the bottle. I believe member DOHC has studied and used this stuff quite a bit and has consistently found reduced iron in used oil analysis with it, and he generally goes one ounce per quart.

TallPaul, thanks for the info on Valvoline's Synpower Oil Treatment. Since my Aerostar's oil capicity calls for 4 1/2 quarts (with filter change, using a Motorcraft FL400s filter) I usually just add 4 quarts of oil at change time, with the thought there is still residule oil in the 3.0 V6. However, I think I'll pick up a 15 oz container of Valvoline's Synpower treatment, and split it between the Aerostar and wife's Escort GT commuter ride. Based solely on your thoughts, and analysis results, Synpower Tmt. looks like a good product. Ed

My wife's Aerostar likes a thicker 30 weight. A half bottle of Synpower OT should bring the typical 10.5 cSt 10w30 up to around 11.5 or 12 cSt.

Looks like one of the few additives that might just be worth the money.

TP, noting the sodium, has anybody over at BITOG mentioned anything about antimony possibly being in the mix? Does Stinky test for antimony?

In my opinion, for what its worth, this is the only additive that has any real value in the bottle IF you need these additives. The old FEs and 385s will certainly love the stuff.

Flash. I think many of us have to get over our old school thought of higher zddp. Of course the new oils with lower zddp are compensated with other additives and we know it. So why do so many of us still act on old knowledge? Human nature sure is a puzzle. I must say, though, that I am using the stuff more to thicken the 10w30 a bit for the Aerostar than to get the adds. (Still, I have my stash of SL oil against the new SM.)

Anyway, I don't know if they test for antimony. What does it do in oil?

BTW, I should note that very unfortunately, Stinky (Mark Mathys), the lab manager at Butler Cat Lab was killed a couple weeks ago in an accident. There are a couple threads on it at the oil guy site in the General Forums. See those titled:

Fellow BITOG Member Dies In Accident, and
Donation to Mark Mathys Fund.
