223 I6 engine oil

Hi everone, just curious as to what type of oil you folks who have the 223 I6 use. I'm going to be changing my oil for the first time since I bought my truck and I'm going with 10w-40. Also correct me if i'm wrong but does the 223 use 4qts instead of 5?

I wouldn't use a none detergent oil in any engine . The 223 was a sludge maker, and using an oil which isn't HD would just add to the problem. I think i'd rather use 10-30
than 10-40. I had a 59 F100 with a 223 in it worked it hard for 15 years engine worked
fine. After a while the timing chain will talk to you, but thats no big deal to
replace, and you will have to adjust the valves if they get noisey, .019. I took care
of a few of them in the fleet I worked for, to bad the bodies didn't last.

Is this an F-100? Click the picture below for a scan of a lube chart. Let me know if you can't read it. I have a hi-res copy.

According to the chart you'll need 5 quarts of SAE 30 for temps above 32 degrees. Not sure which of today's multi-weight oils would be best. Kotzy's recommendation of 10W-30 would probably work. If you don't trust the chart, put four quarts in, run the engine for a few seconds and check the dipstick.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. The truck is a 1960 F100 but it has a 1963 223 I6 engine in it. I think i'll go with the 10w-30 and go with the 5qts per the chart that FFF posted.

thx.

My 223 has 10W30 with no problems but the oil amount is a bit inbetween, 5 liters brings it just over the full line.

The manual calls for straight 30 weight, so that's what I'm using. It's also cheaper...and I can use it in my lawnmower too.
