70 302 charging diagram

Hi, I have now completed the installation of my 302 into the 40 Ford 1 1/2 ton.It went pretty well with very few clearance problems, even used the exhaust system Im so cheap.I have the alternator with terminals on back and a new electronic regulater from napa. From the alt I have one fat black wire, one orange and one black with red tracer.I want to use an ammeter in dash. The regulater reads from left to rt as such...I A S F. Can anyone explain in plain english where each wire goes? I have a friends ford manual but since it uses a plug (gone) it is not too clear.Does it take a different regulater for an idiot light than an ammeter?.. Thanks in advance and keep in mind I am very lame when it comes to electrical stuff! GB

the sending unit determines whether its a guage or a light. not the regulator. i cant remember but part of the letters are ( I = ignition, and F = field ) sorry thats all i remember not much help. if nobody gets back with this before i get home ill look it up for you.

The regulator is the same for an idiot light as it is for an ameter. As far as the wiring goes I can't remember all the connections. The regulator has wire from the battery that is hot all the time. A wire from the ignition that is on when the switch is on. A wire to the field on the Alt. Maybe a wire to the stator? not sure there.

To hook up an ameter you need to be inline on the wire that supplies power to the battery teminal on the ignition switch. Remove the wire on the switch batt. terminal now and attach it to the + side of the ameter. Come off the - side and go the the batt. terminal on the ignition switch with another wire. This way it will show both charging and discharging conditions.

Thanks guys, anyone know about stator wire? there is an S on the regulater. The ford book seems to show that the idiot light has a wire to the stator but not the ammeter version, but nothing is really labled.Hope to fire it up tonight but not sure if it's ok to run an alternator when it isnt hooked up.....thanks, GB
