Smile Better brakes

Dear all,

Finally my first post to this very interesting forum. My name is Nico, living in the Netherlands. Unlike in the US Econolines are quite rare here as is the knowledge about these vans. I have a 1995 E150 Osage van with 351 Windsor

In a few months my engine will be updated to a 393 (running on LPG; Liquified Propane/Petrol gas). This will approx. double the Hp and torque. Already adjusted the shocks, installed sway bars etc etc to handle this power.

However the brakes (100% stock) are not very convincing. Please can you advice me on this topic. Install E250 4 piston callipers or 13 inch disc brakes (I have 20 inch wheels) if these exist at all for an Econoline, or are there better alternatives to increase stopping power?

Thank you very much in advance

wow 20" wheels. i can see why you want more brakes. use the search for this forum. there have been posts on this topic. in the usa the advice is usually upgrade to a e250 or e350, but thats no help to you. at the top of the page click "acticles/info" then "list" and "brakes" someone there upgraded a f150 with some fancy rotors. i think your best bet might be to get high preformance(racing) rotors, calipers and whatever else. this will be easier than adding the 250s' parts. good luck. do you have to change your "chip" with that engine change?. sounds cool.

This is what I would do. It's going to be spendy but WELL worth it. Upgrade the fronts to 13" rotors and quad pistion calipers, then upgrade the rear to 12" discs with dual piston calipers. That should be more than enough to handle that power.

Dear racinrob,

Thanks you for your reply, I will do the search. No I don't change the chip. I won't use it all. The engine will be running on LPG, using a LPG mixer. This will by-pass the motormanagement system and I will just 'throw it away'.

Dear pfogle,

Sounds as just what I need. Can you tell which brand of 13" rotors is available for an E150. I did some searching on www but was not succesful (only found Mustang 13" rotors and I'm not sure if these will fit an E150).

I know my 99 E-350 had dual piston calipers at all 4 wheels, but being 1 ton, I doubt you can use those, it'd be great if you could use the ones designed for trucks, they have many brake upgrades.

I think the truck calipers and rotors for the same year truck SHOULD be the same. I just checked the part number at autozone.com, and the caliper and rotors are the same between the truck and van. So any of the truck upgrades SHOULD work on the van.
