i live in the Netherlands and i have a 1970 Ford F100 2 wheeler with a 302 cdi engine and a three on the tree.
my ?? are:
- the manual shift lever located on the steering column is somewhat lose and therefore shifting doesn't appear to be very straight and smooth.. is that a problem or is that normal considering the age of my truck ??
- when driving in second gear and slowing down the shift lever jumps to the neutral... what causes this ?
- how often should i change the gear fluid and where, what gear fluid should i use
please e-mail me with any and all info. thanks for any help.
John
Hi John,
Those TSB's you found are for a C6 auto, so they are no good for you. My 72 302 3-speed will kick out of second gear too if I use it to slow down, just like yours. It's always done it so I just got used to it, just pull it down to neutral to re-engage the sycros and put it back in second. My shifter was loose and quit working so I replaced the tube and collar on mine and greased it real good and it is as good as new. It makes it a whole lot easier and more fun to drive too. You should be able to get the parts you need from our sponsors. I found a 3-speed column for power steering in the salvage yard I need to rebuild sometime. I found a place in NY I think that rebuilds steering columns too, if I get too lazy or can't get the parts.
The 3 on the tree gets sloppy and worn. It got to the point that I just bought a hurst universal shift kit and mounted the shifter on the floor. It was just easier. But having the 3 on the tree was really nice and fun. More room for people too. Back in the day before the seat belt laws, I had a total of 5 in the cab (we were thin back then). The only time I actually changed the gear oil was when I changed the clutch.
now that's some usefull info !! i was already thinking of replacing the shift collar, but i had no idea if this would improve the situation. you also said you replaced the "tube",
can you please tell me a little more about that ?
hey guys..I am gonna get a 67 f-100 3 on the tree to restore, never had a tranny like that and considered slappin a hurst or such into it to make it more common and universal to other drivers...would this be a mistake and depreciate the value of the 67?? I have restored a few '77+ f series already and gotten a HUGE return on them, any help is appreciated
On that tranny gear oil change, if I recall right, should have two plugs with square ends. The one on the bottom of the tranny is the drain. The one on the side of the tranny is the fill. You'll need to get a pump for the gear oil bottle. The auto parts store should have the pump as well as the gear oil. Remember to screw the plug back into the drain before you start to pump oil into the tranny. Keep pumping until a bit of oil starts to leak out of the side fill hole. Screw the fill hole plug back in and you're done. You can use the pump to check and fill the differential as well.
just try adjusting the shift levers out under the hood before going to the trouble of changing the shift collar. loosen the rods on the transmission and then stick a pin through the hole on the shift levers on the column and then adjust the shift rods to the transmission. i don't know if i explained that too good but maybe somebody can help explain better. i did that on my 1970 and it shifts fine now and don't lock up.
I've got a general question about three speed transmissions. How fast can you generaly go with one? I wanna know if I could take it out on the highway and do 60 mile an hour (100 km/hr) without much problem. I just wanna make sure I can take it out out on the highway for trips longer than 5 minutes without grenading it.

Hi John.
The part labeled 'C' is the tube. Personally, I don't like those Hurst kits that relocate them on the floor. They seem cheap to me and shift sloppy, so I doubt they will last 30+ years like my original column shifter did.
hifiwasabi,
a three speed has a high gear ration of 1:1, the same as a 4 speed or any other non overdrive transmission. As far as the highway running, it depends on your rearend ration. my truck has a 4:11 and three speed and i run it at 60 all the time on the 4-lane with no problem. wouldn't want to get it much over 65 though.
