i've thought about it but when 2 of them say the same thing it kind of scares you i kind of like the idea of a five speed in this truck im not a fan of automatics for towing and i tow alot of cars plus i think i would get better fuel mileage does anyone know how hard it would be to convert i have a fully stocked garage of tools

I don't know where you live but I would seriously consider importing a few mechanics.
It doesn't sound like the ones there are up to much.

any tranny will hold up if built right. if the shops tell you they wont hold then either they suck at their job or are lazy ******

I'd say a combination of both.

Well, we don't know anything about your truck. Can you tell us what year & model it is, whether it's 4x4, and what motor is in it?

Uh, they have a 5 speed auto, that may be what they are suggesting, an upgrade to the new tranny and dump the old ones, I know if I had the cash that is exactly what I'd do.

Your ford dealer can get you one worse case, with a 36K mile warranty for about $1800-1900. http://www.atkengines.com also sells rebuilt trannies, as does 500 other places. I even see them (with a warranty) on e-bay for $600-900 plus shipping.

There are shops around that are "afraid" of certain transmissions because of rumors about difficulty, but it's not any more complicated than any other 4-speed electronically controlled transmission, Ford, GM or Chrysler. It's a large box with some gears and bearings, and some wires hanging off.

You can actually order the "hard parts" and install them yourself. As long as you don't have to replace certain bearings, it can be a DIY job. Some of the bearings require special tools you have to buy from Ford.

And BTW, these trannies are plenty strong. Superduty pickups have had them for years.... they sit well behind 4.6, 5.4 and tow, tow, tow.

Just because the two shops by you employ incompetent monkeys, doesn't mean you're completely screwed. Just don't use their services.

That could be what is in my 99 E-350 SuperDuty 5.4, I hear after upgrades like the micro-tuner and a certain valve installed in the side of the case further their lifespan and make them function more efficiently, you can feel them.
