what to do local rebuilder won't rebuild the 4r70w
my local rebuilder won't rebuild my tranny say's they won't touch my tranny because they won't holdup I'm thinking of puting a 5 speed in but finding parts in my area at a decent price is next to imposible anyone got any ideas i love my truck but cant backup

i've thought about it but when 2 of them say the same thing it kind of scares you i kind of like the idea of a five speed in this truck im not a fan of automatics for towing and i tow alot of cars plus i think i would get better fuel mileage does anyone know how hard it would be to convert i have a fully stocked garage of tools

Your ford dealer can get you one worse case, with a 36K mile warranty for about $1800-1900. http://www.atkengines.com also sells rebuilt trannies, as does 500 other places. I even see them (with a warranty) on e-bay for $600-900 plus shipping.
There are shops around that are "afraid" of certain transmissions because of rumors about difficulty, but it's not any more complicated than any other 4-speed electronically controlled transmission, Ford, GM or Chrysler. It's a large box with some gears and bearings, and some wires hanging off.
You can actually order the "hard parts" and install them yourself. As long as you don't have to replace certain bearings, it can be a DIY job. Some of the bearings require special tools you have to buy from Ford.
And BTW, these trannies are plenty strong. Superduty pickups have had them for years.... they sit well behind 4.6, 5.4 and tow, tow, tow.
Just because the two shops by you employ incompetent monkeys, doesn't mean you're completely screwed. Just don't use their services.
