I just finished a complete rebuild on my 91 ford 460. I can not get the engine to start. It turns over very slowly for a sec and then not at all.starter gets so hot you can barely touch it. Valves are adjusted properly and the timing is correct. Getting plenty of fuel pressure. And great spark. Engine ran before rebuild but was leaking oil horribly. Need help thanks
if you can turn the engine fairly easy by hand I would say you have starter issues. If you can't turn engine over by hand something wrong in engine. By hand I mean with a breaker bar and socket on the balancer bolt.
Check all of your grounds… they may look good but clean 'em all. Make sure the surface between the steel block plate and the transmission bellhousing is free from corrosion.
Cables are new. All ground straps are hooked up.plate between motor and trans was cleaned before install.even hooked up jumper cable from new terminal on battery to engine block
Have new 1000 cca battery that tests perfect. New # 4 cable from starter to solenoid and new # 2 cables at battery. Solenoid is from advance and has been on there for about a year. Usually buy most from napa but was in a bind at the time. Will probably go ahead and replace it when I pick up my starter from napa tomorrow
Put in new starter and solenoid .it still turns over slow. Pulled all the plugs out and it turns over good. Ran a compression test. All cylinders at 150 Except 7 and 8. # 7 has 90 lbs and # 8 has 15 lbs. What the hell? Anyone have any ideas on what went wrong and what to do?
Rocker arms may be to tight holding some valves open. I suppose it could be a bad head gasket. Make sure the timing is pretty close. They will turn slow and buck a bit if you are out 180 degrees.
If your lifters are improperly primed, the valves will stick. loosen those rockers, crank the engine. If it starts, let them chatter and slowly snug them down. Once the chatter stops, shut down the engine, check your clearances, and put it back together. Had an old chevy with this problem when I was younger (didn't know anything about lifters) dropped em in and the damn thing wouldn't start. My uncle (a mechanic with 40 years of experience who I should have asked for help first) came over, popped them loose, and it fired up first try.
Are the 460's heads pedestal or stud mount? If pedestal, then it should only be 18-22 ft.lbs torque.
Why did you have to shim? Were the heads machined to much or did you have the longer intake or exhaust valves installed? What rockers are you using and what ratio?
