Possible problem with '04 Ranger
Hey guys,
Well, just hit the six thousand mile mark on the Ranger. Changed my oil this morning. For some reason, I checked the oil level beforehand, and noticed it was half a quart low. Is this normal for these new type of engines (3.0L, auto) to consume some oil? I've had Fords in the past, and never had this type of problem. Had the dealer change the oil at 3k, and checked the level afterwards, just incase they didn't put the proper amount. At the time, it read fine (less than 2 months ago). To be honest, I've been somewhat disappointed with the quality of my Ranger. I sure hope this truck isn't going downhill. Any suggestions???

My mom has a 2003 toyota corolla and it used a quart between changes out of the factory. All cars naturally comsume some oil. A car fresh out of the factory can use a quart in beween changes. My ranger uses a little oil too. The big thing let it sit for a few hours have a friend start the truck and see if you get a cloud of smoke to see if you are using oil in the first start up. I would also check for a leak look at the valve covers, under the truck, the oil pan , and the rear seal to see if anything pops up. If you see oil any where it shouldnt be spay a little bit a degreaser on the oil spot to determain where it is coming from.

Thanks for the reply. (love the Tyrone avatar too)
Just checked the level again. What a coincidence....the level is still the same from before. I only added 4 1/2 quarts (per the owners manual), but the dipstick shows the oil level in between the min/max marks. Now, is the dipstick wrong, or does the 3.0L engine require 5 quarts of oil???

I have owned a couple of rangers now and have been more than happy with all of them...and owned several other Fords too, My experience has been that from time to time its a little low on oil by the time an oil change comes around....even my 99 Ranger only used about 1/4 to 1/2 quart between changes at 100k miles. I have a 2004 Edge 4x4 with 4.0 liter and has not used a drop at 12k miles. Keep an eye on it and if it gets to be more than half a quart might have them check it out again!
