When Rev-ing the engine in PARK or NEUTRAL, I do not get a steady VROOOM, at about 3,000 RPM on the gauge the VROOOM starts to break up (sounds like valves misfiring) into a shudder. I took it to service and they say this is completely normal (a prevention to stop me from blowing the engine, they say).
It's never done this in the past or I would have questioned it then. It's running rough and does not accelerate well on hills or as quick as it did when I first got it.
Spoke with a co-worker with an '02 explorer and others with a ranger, and they said the rev will slow down steadily at high RPMs, but not a mere 3,000
i have the extended warranty plan, so I am not sure why these guys are jerking me around about this. I have a call in to the service manager, and I hope he can remedy the situation.
The dealership may actually be right. The older Taurus's (there's probably others, but that's all I've had experience with) had a rev limiter of 3000RPM in park or neutral, and yes, it's to keep you from screaming the engine with no load on it. As to what means it uses to control it, from the shuddering it sounds like it cuts fuel. I'd stay off that limiter, and as long as it'll redline in gear, I wouldn't worry to much about it. You can take it to another dealer and get a second opinion, but that's my .02.
Well, I've heard of these rev limiters in park and neutral too. But...this guy said his just started doing this and he also said it's been running rough under load when driving down the road lately. So that almost sounds like a problem with the ignition system.
I know this thread is a year old but if anyone is interested, my 01 Ranger does the same thing. I'm a mechanic and emissions testing manager and today I used my Ranger as a test using a test requiring me to rev the engine slightly above 3000; but my Ranger, which runs great, did cut out roughly at 3K in neutral. In gear (auto) the engine runs well past 3000 rpm. I was trying to verify that a limiter of any kind is on the vehicle by searching my factory manual for the Ranger or Alldata but with no luck.
