First Oil Change

I just dropped by the dealer and had my first oil and filter change done. on the invoice, it says that I was charged for 15 quarts of oil. is that the correct amount? I thought it only used 14. I checked the level on the dipstick and although it is very hard to tell because the oil is so clean, it is full to the top of the level indicator on the dipstick. could there be a problem if too much oil is used?

I also had my first oil change today. My truck only has 2600 miles on it, but I usually change at 1000 the first time with a gas engine. They used 15 quarts of 15W-40 as that is the capacity listed on the owners manual. However, My level also is also just below the top of the plastic indicator. The difference between the add and full marks is supposed to be 2 quarts. Based on that, it looks like we might be a 1/2 to 1 quart over... Probably closer to a 1/2. I doubt thats a problem...But I'm not a mechanic. Anybody else?

thanks rdam. yes, I also believe that the first oil change should be around 1000 miles. since that is what I always did when I owned gas motors, I did the same with the diesel too. I am just a little concerned because this is a high pressure system. I would hate to develop a leak somewhere because too much oil was added by mistake. thanks for your reply

Do a search on this site on oil change. Tim Lamkin and I both found that after draining the pan you replace about 13.5 quarts of oil. 1.5 quarts give or take stay in the high pressure system and rails. Recently, someone else posted that they measured the oil drained on the first oil change and it measured 13.5 quarts which matches my experience. I also spoke with the tech at my dealership and estimated at least a quart gets trapped in the high pressure system.

So in my most humble opinion, in the future only fill to the top of the crosshatch on the dipstick. I put in 12 quarts, run the engine, let it sit for 15 minutes, check the oil and add enough to bring the oil up to midway to top of the crosshatch area on the dipstick. Usually takes about 13.5-14 quarts.

Let the argument begin......

No arguments here. Overfilling is bad (frothing)? Not all 15qts drains out during the change. After my first change, 13.9 qts put the level at the top of the dipstick hash.

On Edit: Forgot to mention that the shop probably shoots the replacement oil from a bulk container and they don't measure it. They bill by the book value.

but will having 15 quarts in there hurt anything? I called the dealer today and they seemed to think everything was fine. they said that is the same amount of oil that they put in the many 6.0 l psd's that they sell.(I live in the Dearborn Michigan area) they must be ignoring the dipstick then. they mentioned a oil pressure relief valve that maintains a certain oil pressure(they did not say what that should be) and also said that as long as the crank was not submerged, then this was not a problem. any thoughts?

YES it can "disrupt" destroy no, however it can and has in the past caused problems.

There is NO dealer in the country that will openly indorse what the members for FTE have found out about over filling of the 6.0. The CANNOT do it. What we have all learned is how to make this engine run a bit better and stay WELL within the limits that Ford established, that being the oil level indicted on the dipstick.

The crank does not need to be submerged to cause wind-age resulting in oil foaming.

The crank also causes a wind vortex as it spins that can cause foam on an overfilled crancase.

will it hurt anything to leave the oil level as it is until my next oil change? or is this something that I need to address right away?

If it isn't causing a problem, I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't mind getting a little oily you could pull the drain plug out for about a quart and put it back in.

Have changed my oil 3 times now, and each time it takes 14.5 quarts to bring it just up to the top of the cross marks on dip stick. Some have said 13, 13.5, 14, 15. You will get a variety of answers. If it is within limits or just a little over on the dip stick, and you have no problems, leave it alone. If you want to drain out a little, go ahead. Fumoto valves make this an easy task. I put one on a few months ago, and yesterday changed oil first time using this little valve. Makes it real easy

And to make the oil level easier to read on that wondeful dip stick, sand off the plastic part on the end. It will dull the sheen and make reading the level much easier.
