Question 22" rims and tires???

I was wanting to put 22 x 10's on my ride, but I am not sure what size tire to go with. I would like to go with as skinny tire as possible, and as big of sidewall as possible, yet have it fit and not rub. (I am going to lower the *** end 2")

I don't know much about tires, so I was hoping one of you tire guys could help me out.

Thanks in advance,

22" Tires

I think your choice of 22" wheels is good. Anything larger just will not have enough sidewall to give you any kind of a ride your truck deserves.

There are a few choices in the 305/40 sizes and Falken has a 305/45 series tire that looks pretty good to me. Search for tires by size on the Tire Rack web site.

The biggest tire you can fit without a lift is a 33x11.5. Anything bigger and they will rub in front. Not sure how it will work in the back when lowered 2". A metric 292 width tire convers to 11.5" with. When you are looking at tire if they are listed in metric sizes here is how you can convert the size to standard inches. If you have a 275/65R18 wich is the original size the came on my truck. The 275 is the width, divide the width by 25.4 this will give you the width in inches. 275/25.4=10.8". Next the 65 is the ratio of sidewall height to the width. Multiply the width in inches by .65. 10.8x.65=7.02" This is the height of the sidewall. Next take the sidewall height and multiply it by 2. This is the total heigh of the sidewall above and below the rim. Then add the rim diameter. This will give you the overall height. 7.02x2=14.04+18=32.04. So a 275/65R18 is actually a 10.8"x32.04" tire

Bob are you speaking from experiance or just thinking out loud? My 305/35/24s on 24x10 ACK Aries rims ride 100 times better than the POS factory 18" BFGs did. I had all kinds of vibrations and steering wheel shake with the factory set up and now all of that is gone. I am not sure how much sidewall flex actually benefits ride quality....I mean how many Mercedes and BMWs do you see with huge sidewalls??? I think the largest factor is tire quality and being most 24s are made to go on luxury SUVs I am sure ride quality was a major concern during development. I am not busting your ***** because I figured like you they would ride rougher but they do not and I would challenge you to take a ride on a set and see for yourself. I do agree with you though if he would be satisfied with 22s thats a lot better choice than 24s for a few reasons....tire selection being one and cost being another. I on the other hand bought my truck for the purpose of going with 24s or 26s....I went with 24s for the reasons I mentioned above about the 22s.

I don't agree... I think all that wheel looks horrible on a 4 wheel drive truck. The rubber is what will take it through what you want it to go through. The best looking 4 x 4's are sitting on 15-16.5" rims with 36-40" of black meat under them. I guess if you only want the truck for looks 24" wheels are the way to go. With a 3" high side walls I doubt airing them down will do you much good in the sand. What happens in the mud with those slicks?? No doubt if you want a plywood hauling BMW 24" rims are where to start.

.. or are we talking 2 wheel drive trucks here??

I agree with Dunk when it comes to 4x4 MO Meat - but on the 4x2 a bigger wheel package looks sweet!

Ben - That paint job ROX!

Dunk...you sound very unhappy with the 24's. Well, I happen to think that rims that are the size of a dinner plate, that are surrounded with bigfoot size tires looks HORRIBlE. I used to think that looked good back in the 80's, but not in 2004. Do you still wear the mullet?? (just kidding....simmer down) Anyway, I like 99.9 of the rest of American society drive my truck on paved roads 99.9% of the time. The reason I bought the 4X4 is for winter driving in the snow....and at that time i put on some stock size tires that have been studded. And, on a 305-45-22, the sidewall is bigger than 3".

Now if you want to throw on some 40" inch gumball tires with a a paper plate for a rim....then go for it. Just make sure you crank your stereo up real loud, so you can hear your music over the very loud howl of those mudder tires you don't really need.

My truck is a 2wd and I was refering to your comment on RIDE quality not offroad ability. All my points were made in reference to ride quality and I can promise you a quality low profile tire will ride better than any 36-40 in tire out there hands down. I bought my truck as my daily driver on paved roads...I have a 03 Jeep Sahra with a 2in lift and 32s for hunting and mild offroading (I wont beat the hell out of it either). So for me a tire and rim that looks good on the road was my only concern.
If my truck was a 4wd I wouldnt have went with anything bigger than a 20 most likely....but then again THAT is the very reason I didn't want a 4wd.

OH YEAH....I wouldn't haul plywood in it either....it might scratch it! LOL I have a trailer for that!
