Question F150 gas gauge acting strange

2001 F150 with 120K on it. This last road trip the gas gauge started acting odd. After filling up the gauge wouldnt go to full until after driving for a time. This is fueling up with the engine off. The few times I have refueled with the engine running the gauge did the same thing. Now it does it everytime. Anything to worry about?

It's not right, but if it is still reading correctly, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

HMMM now that doesn't sound right. THey prolly just didnt want to do the work under warranty. my 02 fuel gauge hits full usually before I can finish getting my belt on and put her in drive.

I had a similar problem on my '99 F-150. The float in the tank was bad and would only read full after driving for awhile. Took it back and they put a new float in and it works fine.

Fuel gauge problem

I am having a fuel gauge problem right now, but it is differnt from what you other guys explain. My problem is, the gauge will only correctly read when I fire up the truck. I can fill up and start the truck and it will show FULL after 4 hours of driving. If I turn the truck off and start it again then it will read somewhere around a quarter tank - the correct level I assume. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Fuel sending unti maybe?? Thanks for any help!!

A characteristic of the fuel guage is a long delay in showing a change in fuel level if the tank receives a relatively small quantity of fuel during fillup (+/- 6 gallons). If you put more into the tank (10 gallons+) you should see an immediate change in the fuel level.

I filled my tank from almost empty and it reads correct but the problem is it stays there until I turn it off and then on again.

You may find this weird. When I refuel, when the gas pump clicks off and I don't top it up, the fuel gauge goes straight to full. When the pump clicks off and I am still trying to squeeze more into the tank, what happens is that the gauge reaches the full mark when it is good and ready. I don't know if I have a float problem or not, but next time you get gas, stop pumping at the first click. Hope this helps.
