How do I remove the Bed Extender?

I have no idea how to remove the Bed Extender in my 04 F150 Lariat SCREW. I use to have a King Ranch F-150 SCREW with a bed extender and it came out really easily just like 2 clips and it was out.

Now Im clueless it looks like it should be the same way.

But if my memory serves me correctly...my old bed extender wasnt in the truck when i bought it, they told me to come back the next day and they would put one in for me it was one from a Explorer Sport Trac.

someone tell me how to get the new one out

You have to loosen the screws that keep the clips in place first- you have to turn them CLOCKWISE- this pulls a little block away from the clip- if you don't loosen the screws, the you won't be able to press the clips out of the way. This information is in the manual on page 81. You should go to the Ford website where you can download a PDF version of the manual- then it's very easy to look in the index and scroll to the right page for info.

Albume27 - I had a 2001 SCREW and now have a 2004, both had bed extenders and both work the same. My new one comes out just like the old one did. rileyb has something interesting posted. I am going to look at the manual when I get home tonight to see what it says and actually try what he said to see if I can lock mine in. The one on my 2001 was stolen and it was almost $300 to replace. I actually locked mine to the tie down with a cable and lock

Did you turn the screws CLOCKWISE- if you turned counter-clockwise like you were loosening a regular screw- you actually tightened the stop blocks against the clips so they can't move.

rileyb is correct turn them clockwise. If you actually look behind the clip you can see the square aluminum nut retract.

The only thing I can think of is that when the dealer put it on they ordered the wrong extender and rigged it to get it attached and now you can't get it off. I would go to the dealer and ask them why it won't come off and see what they say. I have seen aftermarket bed extenders in magazines and on different web sites. Maybee they bought one of theese and put it on your truck and it is designed not to come off ??? Weird

You might have an aftermarket bed extender.

I wanted a bed extender when I bought my FX4 off the lot, but it did not have the $195 option. He told me that as an add on, it would be $300.

When I went back to the dealer to get it installed, it was an aftermarket Westin, not a genuine Ford part. Told him if I order a part for a new Ford from the dealer, I'm talking about FORD accessories. They were reluctant, as he said the Ford part was significantly more expensive than the $300 he quoted, but they relented.

I believe they did have to order a special mounting kit for my truck, as I think they pulled it off another on the lot... and the mounting hardware is not tranferable.

Thanks for the removal advice.... and I'm putting a lock on mine, too. Love the locking tailgate.
